starting the new normal

I hope everyone had as good a day as I did yesterday. This house was filled with love and laughter and loudness. Myself and Marc, my niece and nephew in law, my daughter and son in law, my granddaughter Autumn and her boyfriend whom we met for the first time and I hope we didn’t overwhelm him, all gathered here bringing various assigned dishes to add to the meal. In the midst of the loss we all felt, we affirmed our love and life.

I’m composing this on my phone, first time to try this. When my sister died it was as if someone threw a bomb into the middle of my life.

This morning my niece Denny and her husband Greg left for home in Albuquerque. Robin doesn’t move in until tomorrow. So the house is empty, all family back to their respective homes, the first normal day in 2 weeks only not normal.

And then this, it is possible my 14+ year old computer, so old it cannot be updated, is seriously compromised. In the last week or so I’ve gotten two emails, one on each of my two EarthLink accounts, from me to me citing different reasons why that email would be deactivated if I didn’t click the button to validate it. Spam, I ignored them. But then in between those two I got a another, from me to me, on my personal account claiming to have hacked me and a virus installed that gave access to every keystroke and unless I paid $600 in bitcoin he/it would release all the videos they captured of me masturbating to porn. Also spam except my password for EarthLink was included in the email. So I spent about an hour on Marc’s computer changing the password for all the email accounts, though I may have given access to the new one when I logged onto the Webmail and had to enter the new password. Anyway my tech guru nephew in law Greg said turn my computer off, don’t use it again, do everything on your phone and he’s sending me a Mac mini as soon as they get home. So now I have to spend the day changing that password on every account I used it on…on my phone.

And because shit comes in threes, my neighbor on the east side told me the other day that he’s thinking about selling his house and acre, has already shown it and got an offer but hasn’t made up his mind. He has several other houses so I expect he might go through with it.

Note to Steve of Shadows and Light: while I have been able to comment on other blogs on my phone, yours won’t let me. Says I need to log in but I already am.

  1. I'm glad Thanksgiving went well. What's the effect on you if the neighbor sells his property? It sounds as if you're dismayed.

    1. New neighbors are always iffy. Never know what you’re going to get. And depends on why they are buying. A place to live or investment and development.

    2. And that’s me on my phone.

  2. This looks like a happy family gathering. So good to see it. I hope the neighbour selling does not cause trouble but hopefully a pleasant change?

I am waiting for the day when some virus-hacker whatever invades any of all of our accounts. It'll happen eventually.

For ages I have been unable to comment on several blogger sites via my laptop but can do so via my phone, which is cumbersome. I've followed all the advice from blogger etc. to no avail. Possibly not carefully enough but I could not be bothered. Something tells me that it is most likely due to some cookie or similar settings on my browser but could be a hint from my destiny.

    1. It was a good day full of laughter. Very quiet today. As I wrote to Boud new neighbors are always a little iffy, never know what you’re going to get. The current one has been very easy to get along with. He has an acre so it’s possible a new owner would want to develop it.

    2. That’s me. Apparently on my phone I’m anonymous.

  3. Oh, technology. Gonna be the death of us.
Not really, of course. But it sure can be a pain. And you do not need this at this moment of your life. When I'm in deep grief (and it's happened only a few times) my brain can't focus on anything. It's like instead of brain matter, I have a clump of soggy pasta up there. Obviously, your brain is still very much working but still- that's just too much. Glad you've got a nephew-in-law who knows how to deal with these things.
Looks like your Thanksgiving Day was a good one. Autumn's boyfriend is a darling. I doubt y'all overwhelmed him. Our family overwhelms Vergil but I think he likes it. We're so different from his family. Neither one is better, just very different.
Yeah- so what's up with the possible sale of the property next door?

  4. Ellen, you always come through with thoughtfulness and good judgment! You make the best of what life throws you. One of the reasons I'm glad to "know" you! Don't know if you are using Apple, but...
On my ipad, if I go to Safari settings and have it set to prevent cross-site tracking, my comments will all be anonymous. To be Runnrose, I have to enable cross-site tracking. Just looked. If your phone is like mine, an iphone, it would do the same. A trick of Google, methinks!

  5. Gosh, when it rains it pours on you, Ellen! You have enough to handle without extra troubles. Glad your family gathered to share good food and laughter. Hang in there - the computer shit will all work out. So annoying for you, tho.

  6. May your computer woes be the end of your woes for a long time! I am happy to learn your Thanksgiving day was filled with love. I had a nice day, too, and when I finally turned my attention to my phone, just before going to bed, I learned my damn NY bank credit card had been compromised, again. Every two or three months, it blows up again and I'll get a replacement in five to seven days. I am so sick of this.

  7. What a lovely gathering! I'm glad you had that moment of joy because tech stuff is THE WORST. I randomly can't comment from my iPad (never tried from my phone). It's funny because I can comment on Wordpress blogs & Steve Reed's, but not ones like yours (it's because his comment section is a pop up maybe?). Anyway - I wish you the best in getting it all sorted out!

  8. Hmmm...that's weird about commenting on my blog. Why would it be different from other blogs?

I think that e-mail was phishing spam. They probably hacked Earthlink and got your password. I doubt they're on your computer at all. But I am no expert.

    1. 37paddington—I have the same commenting issue with your blog Steve. Weird.

  9. 37paddington—Nothing normal about your sister being gone. But you go on. Heart in shreds from missing her, the memories you shared will sustain you. Sending love to you.

  10. Technology is so frustrating. One of my email suppliers has changed their whole interface and with each browser it comes up differently. One of my new years resolutions is to work on all my passwords. Maybe I have over a hundred??

  11. No big gathering here, but the traditional foods made us happy. Of course, I think the best part of the day (food-wise) is the leftovers, and I have enough for a couple more meals. That comment above about cross-site tracking is important, even if it's not relevant to your current troubles. On an update some time ago, Safari disabled it. Once I heard about that and went in and restored it, I had a very devil of a time commenting on blogs.

I opened my big mouth, now it's your turn.
