It's
cold out (well, it's been cold out, very nice today, supposed
to get up to 67˚). They are saying we had the coldest December on
record and I believe it. Not that we had the coldest temps on
record, but the average temperature throughout the month. It was a
very cold month. Days have been overcast and windy as well.
Of
course, we got the garden in late so combined with the unseasonably
cold and overcast days it's not growing well. I got my carrot,
lettuce, and spinach seeds in even later. The carrots and lettuce
sprouted weeks ago but that's about it. Some of the spinach is
growing albeit very slowly.
And
Monday night it's supposed to get down to 25˚ so I think we are
going to have to cover the garden. And then, they are predicting a
high on the following Thursday for 72˚. We've always had extremes
of weather here but climate change is making the extremes even more
so.
Large
groups of geese have been heading south the last couple of days,
fleeing from the arctic front headed this way I suppose, the one
that's dropping temps all along the Canadian border to highs below
zero. Fahrenheit.
The
grandgirls go home today, it's my one Saturday off of the month from
the antique store, and today's weather is making me want to do stuff
outside.
I
decided I was going to take a selfie every Friday this year. Here's
the first one. We'll see how long this lasts.
nice to 'see' you! :)
ReplyDeletei LOVE kohrabi!!!
that was supposed to be kohlrabi.
ReplyDeleteSee you are fortunate to live where you can have cold weather crops most of the winter. I can't do so after October 1 and not again until March 17.
ReplyDeleteI'm too chicken to do selfies....dont' want to scare folks. You're looking good and I like your idea. Oma Linda
These are great photos Ellen. Hey, your garden looks pretty darn good to me.
ReplyDeleteI think I have that same shirt!
ReplyDeleteAll of your pictures are lovely- especially the one of you.
I have fun with the pics also. Nice to have the veggies, all I have is catalogs to look at until April.
ReplyDeleteYou know that few places can grow vegetables in the winter months! A selfie a week: what a great idea!
ReplyDeleteFresh cauliflower, yea! Kohlrabi, not so much. Mother OD'd us on them one summer.
ReplyDeleteThe selfie gets such a bad rap. I love selfies. My own and others. They're so easy.
ReplyDeleteSelfie...something new this year. I do think your garden makes my mouth water. We are under an inch of snow and weather is well below freezing!!!
ReplyDeleteit's all in what you acclimatized to, I reckon- 67 degrees is about the warmest it gets here in the middle of a heat wave! I am chilled to the bone, I eat, I drink massive amounts of tea, I find it difficult to go out...not a healthy lifestyle. A friday selfie every week? You could start a trend!
ReplyDeleteHi there, Ellen, nice to see you.
ReplyDeleteAnd could I please have some of those Kohlrabi you’ve grown? They are a staple in Germany but almost impossible to find in the UK.
What a nice garden.
ReplyDeleteThat sky is sooo blue. Wow. Good work capturing the image of flying geese.
Hey! Nice to finally see you!!
ReplyDeleteAnd a winter garden. :-) For some reason, that makes me smile.

I love your garden, it's nice to think of things growing this time of year. I hope the weather doesn't harm the plants.
ReplyDeleteLove your selfie, and all your photos. Stay warm. I haven't left the house all day and I don't intend to. - 15 with 25 mph winds for a -45 windchill. I dream of moving south!
I have a much more feeble winter garden than yours. Only thing edible is the mint and rosemary right now. Rabbits have done in the chard completely, so I'm jealous of your winter veggies!
ReplyDeleteNice how you captured both of you in that selfie. :)
Oh man I was supposed to try to grow lettuce this year. Oops.
ReplyDeleteLove the selfie and that geese shot - cool!
Ha.. I like the idea of your weekly selfie. Nice start. :)
