two favorites

Have I mentioned that I'm a big science fiction fan? I think I have. Probably 75% of my reading as a young adult was science fiction, maybe more. I did eventually mature and moved on to romance.

Hee hee, just kidding. I still read a good dose of science fiction and will generally go see any science fiction movie.

I guess movies is where I learned to love science fiction since I stayed up many nights in the early 60s watching things like Attack Of The 50 Foot Woman and The Amazing Colossal Man and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers on the one hand and Tarzan movies and Sinbad the Sailor movies on the other.

I'm also a big fan of westerns and will pretty much go see any western movie though I never got into them for reading material. However mixed in with the sci-fi on TV was Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman, Maverick, Gunsmoke and The Rebel. These were the stories and myths I grew up with.

So when the opportunity arises to go see a western and a science fiction movie, two classic genres, and they're the same movie, baby, I'm there.

Cowboys & Aliens with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford opened last Friday and Saturday Marc and I went to see it.

I was not disappointed.

That's all I'm going to say about it besides remarking on what a fine specimen of manhood Daniel Craig is and Harrison Ford ain't too shabby either. The rest of the cast were not really known to me but the actor that played the rancher's son reminded me of my high school sweetheart. And I was pleased to see that the three female roles were played by women with natural average sized human shaped breasts. And by natural, I mean not enhanced. It was refreshing to not see women with unnaturally large perfectly round cantaloupes on their chests.

And so as long as I'm going on about sci-fi and westerns, I'll point you to a personal favorite and under appreciated series, Firefly, best described as a western in space. 14 episodes were filmed but the series was canceled before they all aired. The movie Serenity that came out several years ago was the end piece to the series. Serenity was the name of the ship.

Here are three short clips from the series and let me tell you, I had the devil of a time selecting just three.

  1. I'm not sure why but the part of an movie that sticks in my mind the most is the scene where Cary Grant is waiting at the crossroads in North By Northwest. I to remember watching some of the things you mention.

  5. My daughter & BF said it was good. They love seeing any new movie to review. I am a hopeless romantic comedy lover.

  6. We discovered Firefly last year through Netflix and ate them up like a late night raid on the Oero cookies!

  7. sci-fi was a staple for me through high-school, peaking with delaney's dhalgren and then returning in a big way with william gibson's writing which has pretty much stuck with me. otherwise i don't read it but watch absolutely anything that could be classed as sci-fi. when i saw the trailer for cowboys and aliens i wondered if it was a spoof. i mean really?! but the pieces i've seen and heard since suggest that it has a lot more substance to it so i'm really tempted. steven

  9. I'm a fan of the same shows and series!!!!

I saw this new movie advertised and couldn't for the life of me figure out how they were going to pull this off. I do love Daniel Craig... an excellent new 007... and loved Harrison Ford.. pre hair plug days.

I don't like slasher movies and apart from Night of the Living Dead.. am not a zombie fan...

That being said... I am waiting on October for the second season of the Walking Dead... I hope that's the name.. mind is gone.

It is an original series on the American Movie Channel and you can see the full first season on their web site. Wish there was More Firefly and Serenity.

  11. I can't wait to see "Cowboys & Aliens". I'm a huge western fan. The only really great western I've read is "Lonesome Dove" and it was fabulous. Just reading it you could feel the dirt, grime, and sweat of a south Texas day.

  12. You are the second person to give a thumbs up to Cowboys and Aliens. We're currently trying to set up a playmate for my son so he and a friend can go to Cars 2 while we go to Cowboys. That is how desperate I am. So hopefully next Friday all our schedules will line up and both movies will still be playing.

I never watched Firefly, but I really liked Serenity a lot. Perhaps I should put the TV series on my Netflix list.

  14. OK, i believe you.
Sci-fi scares me, there's too much blood in Westerns ad too many horse get felled. I like old-fashioned Westerns. Romance is just boring.

We simply don't see the same stuff you have.

  15. I heard a review on the radio only yesterday about this movie, it sounds intriguing! I also saw all the Firefly series that aired over here, and wasn't it fab?

I am a terrible grump in movie theatres, I end up fuming over either constantly having my chair back kicked, people talking over the dialogue, or countless other minor infractions that sets my teeth on edge (I am a sad old sack).. I tend to wait 'til a movie I like the sound of comes round to the DVD..!

  16. We LOVED Firefly & were so sad to see it go away. It was kind of fun seeing Mal be the bad guy in Buffy though...

Since I'm a new Daniel Craig fan I'll have to check out the movie. Maybe that's what I'll do during my recuperation. Except I guess it won't be out on DVD yet will it. Bummer.
