more of the same

Lately, every time I wake up during the night and in the morning there is a different song in my head. I have no idea why my brain picks the ones it does and it's usually just a refrain repeating over and over. Last night one of the times I woke from a dream or to change position the name Boo Radley was there repeating over and over. I knew it was a fictitious character so after I got up to go to the bathroom I picked up my phone in the middle of the night to google the name. Boo Radley, the probably abused quiet man who refused to come out of his house except at night to walk when the town was settling down for sleep from To Kill A Mockingbird. Now why the hell did my brain drag that up? I read that book probably over 50 years ago and if someone had asked me point blank yesterday the name of that character I doubt I would have been able to come up with it or even remember that character.

Marc and I got our Moderna booster shots yesterday and my arm was sore and I was a little achy during the night but I feel OK today so far. I was reading yesterday that the general consensus among scientists is getting to the position that covid is here to stay, much like the flu. One scientist said he would probably wear a mask in the grocery store and on airplanes for the rest of his life but that otherwise life needed to get back to normal and normal now means another virus that just is. It will probably have seasons much like the flu with colder weather and more indoor activities but with vaccination and the new developing medical treatments it probably won't be any worse than getting the flu. In fact, the report said there are areas where the death rate is lower than that for flu but also areas where it is much higher. I guess it remains to be seen if the vaccine for covid will have to be administered yearly like the flu vaccine.

Butterflies have been migrating through...sulfurs, long wings, monarchs, fritillaries, the buckeye, and this red admiral also a bit tattered.

I think I've finally got the design for the comet moth done so I'm ready to make the wax base for it and the small pink trumpet flower. Maybe today. Rocky's supposed to come over later and cut the plywood for me for mounting the two trumpet flower pieces.

A bit of good news yesterday on the political scene...the Justice Department indicted Steve Bannon for contempt and issued a warrant for his arrest for his refusal to comply with the subpoena from the January 6 Commission to testify and provide documents. It seemed to take far too long, that maybe Merrick Garland was not going to enforce the congressional subpoena but the wheels of justice turn slow and Garland has said that the Justice Department will abide by the law. The indictment and subsequent warrant for Bannon's arrest can't compel him to testify but if he doesn't, he's likely to be fined up to $2000 and spend two years in jail. As Heather Cox Richardson says, if he's in jail he won't be able to record his podcasts and further whip up Trump's base and that would be a good thing. Trump's Chief Of Staff Mark Meadows deadline to abide by his subpoena ran out yesterday so we'll see if this changes his mind or if he will be the next to be referred for criminal contempt.

Thursdays are very busy days as are Fridays pretty much. I can write or read and so I find myself behind. Today is busy too but I'm trying to, if not catch up, then at least get current. We'll see. I'm working in the shop today.

  1. Your butterfly is a welcome sight, we have had zero for the past three years, Just the little cabbage moths.
There will be another jerk filling the stinky shoes of Bannon- but I do think he belongs in the slammer for a few thousand years. The law is the law, dude...

  2. Beautiful drawing of your next piece. You have such a delicate yet sure hand.

    1. It took me forever to do the leaves, changing this one, moving that one. I started to try another minor variation this morning and just had to tell myself to let it be. It's all about balance.

  3. Hear, hear! (for Bannon getting indicted. He deserves that and more. But so does Trump! I'm waiting for the shoe to drop on that bad banana! Meanwhile, the drawing for your newest piece is lovely. I like that caterpillar crawling up the leaf! Neat. Do take care and thanks for sharing your world.

  4. The drawing of your next piece is so beautiful. Looking forward to watching this unfold here.
The wheels of justice do turn slowly, but I'm hoping to see Bannon and Meadows in prison soon. Yes!

  5. It makes me smile that we read the same things - I read that article with the scientist too, and of course HCR. Just a few years ago I ignored stuff like that. Go me! Ha!

I really do need to get my booster. I've been thinking about looking for Moderna because I had the Pfizer & maybe I'll be "extra" boosted with a different one.

    1. Just a bit of information -- not advice. My doc said not to mix vaccines, and my pharmacist said they've been instructed not to mix vaccines even if someone requests it. All I know is that if I use solvents not made by the same manufacturer as my varnish, things don't always work so well, but that probably has zero to do with vaccine mixing!

    2. Excellent plan, exactly what's recommended by the experts. 3rd Moderna shot after 2 Pfizer's ups the efficacy significantly. I'm doing the same.

  6. I don't know how things have changed, but the combination of the moth and the leaves looks pretty darned good to me!

  7. We had so few butterflies this year, so I'm glad to see they're still somewhere.

Every artist needs an assistant to shout "Stop!" at some point. Your inner artist stepped up on time. Yes, done.

  8. Wait, it's Boo Radley in "To Kill a Mockingbird," isn't it? Maybe Boo Randall is his cousin. :)

I had no idea that red admirals lived in North America! I swear I never saw one there. I thought they were a European butterfly. We have tons of them here in the UK.

I was just telling someone that same thing about Covid -- that it's here to stay and we all just have to deal with it. I'm not crazy about the idea of masking for the rest of my life, though, not even just on airplanes. It seems to me that if we're vaccinated we eventually ought to be able to put away the masks, especially as the shots get better. We'll see how that goes.

    1. Yes! Radley. And that's what I had in my head. Just wrote it wrong in the post. Now I have to change it.

  9. Then again, we threw Polio out, I believe we can do that for Covid.

  10. There were some monarchs at the beach this weekend. I believe they are later than the main bunch of them. But they were lovely, flitting about.
I was glad to hear that about Bannon. What a POS he is.

  11. Love the vitality of your drawings!

Love seeing the sunny world you live in where butterflies can be seen migrating!

  12. Right now I have "I'm still standing" on repeat in my head. Soon it will be something else, probably worse.

  13. That moth design is spectacular! It must be wonderful to get to see so many different butterflies passing through. I have upped the available flora in order to keep them fed and entertained up here, but it always seems like such a short time.

  14. I had heard that Bannon's fine could be up to $1,000, but it's not unusual for the media to report different things. Either would be a joke to Bannon--sort of like fining me a dollar. Two years in jail would be another matter, but I'll believe it when I see it, it being so rare for rich people to serve time.

I was sick for six days after getting my third Pfizer shot, but then I got a flu shot at the same time, so I can't even say for sure which it was. In any case, at my sickest, I was too nauseous to hold down water, so if the nauea hadn't lifted when it did, I would have seen a doctor. I will still get the shot, of course, but I sure hope I do better next time.

    1. I read $1000 per charge, two charges, same with the jail time 1 year per charge. I agree, the fine is nothing to Bannon and if the judge that has pulled the case is as biased in favor of Bannon as the judge in Rittenhouse's trial is, Bannon will neither be fined not serve jail time. This country is in clear decline.
