general stuff

Missed my day at SHARE Thursday to get my new crown seated. It was 11 on Thursday or another 4 or 5 days before I could get in so I hope they weren't busy (they weren't). The weather was pretty icky; cold, overcast, and wet from the rain yesterday when the front came in so maybe not too many people showed up.

The crown went on and I left though it felt a little high but it's not always easy to tell so we decided to live with it a day or so but after lunch I knew it would need more adjusting so I called and they got me in right away and now it feels perfect.

We turned on the heater last night as the temp in the house had dipped below our heat setting of 68˚. This morning it was 44˚ at 8 AM and supposed to get down to 41˚ tonight so we're have our first days of winter weather. But the sky cleared and the sun is shining so my mood, predictably, has improved.

I worked on the next design for the last stand, or rather I choose my subject and scrolled through many pictures of the comet moth, comet moth caterpillar, and eucalyptus leaves but I selected a few images and am now ready to work on a drawing.

I had thought to use the same format as the luna moth with the wings extending beyond the sides but if I do, it will have to be taller as the comet moth's trailing wings are longer.

And really, that's all I have to write about. Politics is too depressing, can't even read Heather Cox Richardson's newsletters in which today's she reports the Republicans are tightening their hold on state and national seats through even more extreme gerrymandering especially in states the Democrats won this last time around and the Senate Republicans have squelched even discussions of the voting rights act through the filibuster for the third time.

This is the happiest thing I can think of right now.

  1. So glad that the crown has been seated and filed down to fit perfectly. Yay! That's good news, a very welcome thing these days.
That comet moth is such a beauty. It's like a stunning ballerina dancing. I love it. I'm so looking forward to your art project on this.
I read the first few sentences of Heather Cox Richardson's latest post. Ugh. The Republicans play chess while the Dems play checkers. It's such a bummer.
That is the most adorable baby.

  2. We're very depressed about all of this. I just can't believe the malfeasance of the republican party. They are just monsters, all of them.

  3. What a relief to that crown in and fitting properly! Doesn't that make a world of difference? It did for me.
Our weather, as usual, has echoed yours. We are in the cold and rainy stage here. Not TOO cold but our heat is on too.
Oh, that baby! Lily and Jessie and I were all talking about how long it's been since we've held babies and how much we miss it.

    1. One more to go and hopefully that will be all. This one was supposed to be the last but another molar cracked. Audra and the baby were out on the porch when I dropped Robin off at home yesterday so of course I had to get out and hold her for a little while. And then I dreamed last night about holding a baby boy dressed in pink with crinkly ruffles. I was more perplexed about the crinkly ruffles than the pink onesie.

  6. So glad you have the baby in your life. She's lovely. Such a relief to have a crown finally fitting so that you don't know it's there. I have a couple, and they're trouble free once they fit right.

    1. I have more crowns than not so my advice is to not traumatize your teeth at 16. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

  8. I have my thermostat set at 68, too. So far, I've dipped only to 69, and yesterday it actuall rose to 71. From the forecast, it looks as though the next week will be warm enough to stay above 68, too. Keeping that electricity bill down is one of my little life pleasures.

    1. It gets a little colder out here than in urban areas. We generally turn the heat down to 65 at night when we go to bed. We have propane for heat and it's expensive right now, had the tank filled yesterday.

  9. That last picture makes up for all the agony. I do look forward to the moth. That will really be exotic! Our weather here starts out in the low 40's so the heat in the house is on. Really on now because I have a painter and he has windows open and fans going.

  10. Holding a baby like that cutie sure does lift your spirits! That comet moth is lovely! Can't wait to see what you do with it!
The Nov. 5th Heather Cox Richardson's newsletter was much more uplifting. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed with bipartisan support and will head to Biden's desk for approval. Unemployment claims are down and job creation is up so that is good!
Stay warm and have a nice weekend!

  11. That comet moth is amazing! I really wonder if all this Republican extremism isn't just a death rattle. So much seems to be against them in the long run -- the changing demographics of the country (which are a fact no matter how much they fight), the relative liberalism of younger voters. I chafe at every move they make but I sustain myself by thinking that they'll lose many of their ideological battles in the long run.

I love that comet moth. I've never seen anything like it.

  13. I very much miss luna moths along with many other natural wonders of the South. For instance, here in the Willamette Valley, there are no cardinals, no lightning bugs, few lizards, and lightning is rare, but then there are no fire ants, tornadoes, or hurricanes (although there are massive forest fires, and we're overdue for a +9 earthquake).

I've had so many crowns by now that I've concluded that if one feels too high at the dentist's it's not going to feel lower later.

Yes, politics are a downer. Perhaps you too had hoped things would be better with Democrats in charge, but they're unable to keep their team together the way Republicans do.

Temperatures here of late are much like yours, although drizzle is common and sunshine is rare here from November to May.

    1. I think I'd rather risk a hurricane than forest fires or earthquakes though I admit fire ants are a pain.

Things are better with the Democrats in charge...child poverty has decreased, covid is being addressed via Biden's aggressive vaccine programs even though the stupid and selfish still refuse, more jobs created in the first year than Trump's four years, the economy is doing well despite republican lies, and now the infrastructure bill has passed and I'm confident the Build Back Better will pass. Things would be even better if we didn't have two wolves in sheep's clothing ostensibly on our side and by that I mean Manchin and Sinema who I think are republican sleeper agents. What I'm disappointed about mainly is the inability to pass the voting rights act to counter republican voter suppression tactics. I'm afraid they'll have it so rigged by 2022 and 2024 that democrats won't have a chance. And I wish the justice dept would get off it's ass and arrest Bannon and start indicting the guilty congresspeople who were complicit in 1/6 including Trump. The difference between Democrats and Republicans, the way I see it, not that Democrats can't control their party but that Republican browbeat, threaten, and force their member to tow the party line whether they are on board or not while Democrats allow their party members to vote their conscience which I think is better for the nation.

  14. I can see where holding a baby would cheer you right up - she's adorable! Glad the crown is situated. It's such a weird feeling when they're too high.

I started using some of my blue colors on my temperature blanket this week - I know it will balance out the blanket & make it look nice, but I wasn't very excited about it :)
