it's so hot out there it makes you gasp

And it's going to get hotter, predicting 102˚ or higher for Monday depending on which weather service but maybe some rain next week which would be wonderful since it's been forever since we got any decent rain. It is so dry out there that I'm having to water every day. I try to get out there as soon as I wake up but I didn't get up til 8:30 this morning and an hour later I had only watered half the back yard.

Good news is the inside of the house is finished! Rocky switched out the faucet and got the sink installed again, put up the towel bar and TP holder, shelves in the closet. I got the shower curtain hung and put the shelves in the mirrored cabinet, touched up the paint here and there and then noticed that I had to practically slam the bathroom door to get it to latch. Not practically but actually. It hung up at the bottom and stuck out and the latch had to be forced (hence the slamming) so I got the sander out and examined the jamb and the hardware on the door and none of it was flush (except for the top hinge on the door). So I removed it all and carved out the indentions better and adjusted the catch on the jamb (which Rocky had already done) which involved a chisel and longer screws and wood putty and and sanded down the jamb at the bottom and it took me all fucking day but now the door closes and latches easily (if still firmly) except it still hangs up a little at the bottom but I need coarser sandpaper and then I have to touch up the paint and hope like hell that the thickness of the paint doesn't cause it to hang up again. These are all after pics, because...me, just to show you what I worked on all day besides sanding the bottom of the jamb down some...

It's not that Rocky did a bad job when he hung the door. It's this crazy house where nothing lines up and he spent nearly a whole day just getting the door hung in the first place. I'm sure he was frustrated and slamming at that point must have seemed good enough.

Anyway, here's the new bathroom. Just a reminder, this room is 5' x 5'.

and the closet and the small hall.

  1. If that were my weather, I'd be as pale as Gollum by mid-August because I wouldn't be setting one morsel of my body outside until it was all over.
Love the beadboard. I'm a big beadboard fan. How wonderful to be done.

  2. That bathroom looks great! And I love the flooring in that bedroom.

Man that is HOT. I don't see how you stand it...

  3. Hurray, hurray! It's all done and it's beautiful and you did an amazing job getting that door closeable. I know exactly what you mean- nothing in this house is straight either.
Funny how we've been absolutely leading these parallel lives in some way.
And the heat here- just crazy. But at least we have been getting our afternoon thundershowers which make such a huge difference in the temperature after they pass. They are nothing short of a blessing.

    1. still have to do a little more sanding but I'm ready to get started on some real art work. Guess I'll give it one more day and then out comes the art stuff.

  4. I love the little bathroom. It is so pretty. Yay, it's finished and yay you can move on to thinking about other things. Congrats.

  5. Hurrah! It looks so pretty, but then I love blue too. And yellow. Just light colors, not dark ones inside the house.

  6. The bathroom looks wonderful. Isn't it always those last, little details that get you? They aren't usually "hard" to deal with, but they do seem to take inordinate amounts of time. Good for you, getting it done and out of the way.

I'm currently painting my bathroom. I'm not doing it very quickly, but I've got a couple of walls done. It's a weird but nice arrangement, with nine walls of various sizes, so I have a ways to go, especially since there are a lot of shelves to take down and reinstall. But I have new flooring -- a kind of charcoalish vinyl planking -- and the kind of grayish-sage green paint looks great with it. Plus, new paint always spiffs things up.

Heat. Oh, my. I actually got up at 5:30 this morning and drove down to the Brazoria refuge, just to see what was going on. The ponds have dried up, and there weren't any birds around. Smart birds. I did see one water snake and one alligator. Water's the place to be just now.

    1. 9 walls is weirdish wonderful. I love that sort of sage green. I drove by part of Boughman Slough yesterday (one of the waterways that contributed to the flood) and it had quite a bit of water in it. I was surprised as hot as it's been and how little rain we've had.

  7. How do you live in the oven? I do not know, I would have to spend my days in the bathtub. Your house is looking amazing, such lovely color choices.

    1. being born down here and acclimating as it gradually got hotter, real thin blood. but we just don't go outside for more than a few minutes at a time during the worst of it. oh yeah, and AC. would die without it.

  10. It almost looks as if you could do an awful lot of the jobs yourself. How do you manage to move AND work in 39C? The whole world is turning to cinders.

I am so sorry about the political mess in the US. Brexit is no fun either but at least it’s not as frightening as a maniac who could turn insane any minute and set off WWIII. I feel I ought to tell you: when we had these huge demonstrations and marches while your POTUS was here (because I think they really like me!) they weren’t aimed at Americans, just him. Many Americans were part of the march.

    1. we've retired from our main occupation, the etched glass. the art pieces we still do but I do model making in the summer which I do indoors. and yes, I could have done most of the remodeling myself but it would have taken 4 times as long. couldn't live in the ruined part of the house for that long. as it was it took 10 months to get the three rooms re-done after the flood.

those of us here who still have a heart (and really, that's most of us but we just won't get out and VOTE!) know that the demonstrations were only against Trump (and I hope his cultish followers because that's what it is, a cult). it makes us happy to see the rest of the world express their opinions of him. if we don't get some kind of control back, we will become a Russian satellite with Putin calling the shots. a sad end to the promise.

  12. I'll bet your wood floor is real wood. My living room floor is relatively new, couple of months old, and a composite flooring that looks identical to yours. I'll say nice choice because it is beautiful. Our choice was made because I found it at Habitat for Humanity thrift shop at about half the price of new some place. I love it.

    1. I do have hardwood floors in the part of the house on pier and beam but the floor in this picture is vinyl floating plank on slab. this was the part of the house that flooded during hurricane Harvey. I opted for the vinyl because if, all the powers that be forbid, it happens again, I can take this up, clean it, and put it back down. so 'they' say. Looks damn good doesn't it?

  13. It's amazing how large that room looks for a 5x5. I love the colors, too. Now that this is done...what's next? I'd put myself in cold storage in that weather - I am definitely a cold weather person. However, it seems that I am looking further and further north as my final destination - vis a vis retirement. Nova Scotia? We finally are getting some rain and it's quite a relief, even though it's going to mean war with weeds. I hope you get enough rain to ease your drought soon - but not enough for flooding.

    1. next the outside of the house has to be painted and now that the little bathroom is done I want to re-do the main bathroom that wasn't flooded but that will have to wait til next year at least. I'd think about moving more north except for the fact that places north of me are experiencing even hotter weather. I don't think there is any place to go to escape.

  14. The house looks great! It's cool to see the finished bathroom floor in context with the rest of the room.

  15. the bathroom is right out of NYC. Or any older hotel in Europe. But I like it.
On the other hand, your weather, not so much.

    1. hey Rosie! yeah, I'm not thrilled about the wether either especially since it's a month early and more severe but apparently it's not limited to us anymore since I'm seeing reports of heat waves like this up north.

  16. That bathroom is charming - the colors, the tile, the window. It took a lot of work but you'll enjoy it for a long time.
