The weekend was cold and wet, Sunday not as cold but still unpleasant and I rarely ventured out. Wasn’t really raining, just drizzly, wet. Saturday the dog and cat went out briefly a couple of times, relieved to come back in. Sunday Minnie stuck her nose out the back door a couple of times and, nope. Cat on the other hand wanted out until I let her out and 20 minutes later dashed in when I checked on her and then about an hour later wanted out the front door, convinced there would be different weather out that door. She was sorely disappointed, came in and fussed at me. This is how Minnie spent the weekend.
Saturday I only went out twice, once with the dog long enough for her to take care of her business and then later to go feed the outdoor kitties, Sunday only once for the same reason (three of the four in the picture…Momcat, Handsome Boy, and Lovey.)
In between I finished the drawing I was working on and tried to make headway in my book. I’m reading The Book Of Elsewhere by Keanu Reeves and China Milville about a timelessly old warrior who cannot be killed, who has seen the rise and fall of empires so old no trace or memory is left. Well, he can die but he resurrects forming a whole new body. I picked it out at the library, thought it would be interesting but it’s hard going to get invested in. The writing style is a little difficult and a little hard to follow, starting in modern times with zero explanation, though it seems to be getting a little easier, she says, until the next segment I read from sometime in the far past. I’m only 80 pages in out of 337 at this point.
Sunday I got out my watercolors and prepared to do another painting, another landscape, transferring the major vertical lines to the paper though I didn’t actually start the painting. Today is the annual holiday potluck lunch at SHARE and I still have to make my contribution this morning.
Also today, I have to call the dentist to reschedule my teeth cleaning…again. They called and canceled the first time because the hygienist wasn’t coming in that day and rescheduled me for last Wednesday 3 pm. I got there on time, waited half an hour and decided if I waited any longer I would not have the time to get to yoga that evening so I told them I couldn’t wait any longer and rescheduled it for 11 am Tuesday. But it’s not a good time or day either since that’s the day I do my grocery shopping in the morning. I’m a little annoyed about it all anyway since last time I had to wait about 45 minutes. I’m going to tell them that if she’s running more than a half hour behind again to call and tell me before I show up on time as the office is only about 5 minutes away. As it turned out, I didn’t go to yoga last Wednesday because although I checked the radar in advance when I started out it was drizzling and getting heavier, not a condition I want to drive on the highway in the dark in. So I turned around and came back and I’d only gone the equivalent of a few blocks. It’s still overcast and heavy with fog and dew outside today with rain predicted but it’s going to be warm, low 80s. And now I need to go make the salad I’m taking.
The picture at the top is the pink trumpet flower shrub still blooming profusely. This is the best it’s ever done, just as full of blooms on the other side.
So refreshing to see that you have flowers still. I know you call this winter but you have no idea what it's like here . . .
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had flowers this late for probably four or five years. I spent a winter in Chicago one year. It was heinous. Freezing, windy, snow, ice; never been so fucking cold in my life, being the good Gulf Coast prairie girl that I am.
DeleteThe trumpet flower is looking great, and Minnie cracks me up, lying there with her eyes wide open! What is up with your hygienist that she's so behind schedule? My dentist usually gets me in right away. (Granted I usually schedule an early morning slot.)
ReplyDeleteI think she she sleeps with her eyes open sometimes. I have no idea why the hygienist runs so late sometimes and what's worse, she's a Trump supporter.
DeleteIf you want an interesting book (and haven't already read it), try The Boys in the Boat.
ReplyDeleteI'll put it on my list and see if the library has it.
DeleteSupposed to get up to 76° here tomorrow and there's a chance of rain both then and on Wednesday. We shall see. I need to go take the covers off the porch plants. I have been naught but a slug for the past few days but now that the colonoscopy is behind me (the puns just write themselves) perhaps I'll manage to get up offa that thing. Have you ever read Robert Heinlein's "Door Into Summer"? There's a cat in it who goes from door to door, looking for the one that leads to summer.
ReplyDeleteI have read that but it would have been in my 20s or early 30s when science fiction was just about all I read. I probably read everything Heinlein wrote. Lots of fabulous prescient fiction written back then.
DeleteI had to laugh today. I started out with jeans, a tee, a jacket, and socks, and by noon I was home for the great clothing change: down to capris and a tee. I couldn't believe how warm it got -- 76 here. But it was nice to have good weather to work in . Now it seems the roller coaster's going down again; we'll see. I hope sometime in all these changes we get some actual rain out it, instead of the drizzle. That trumpet flower is glorious. I saw some freshly blooming goldenrod today; it's hard to predict what will try to give it one more go if we get more warmish weather and some rain.
ReplyDeleteWe don't really have winter so much as the season of changing clothes. Nice and warm in the morning, plummeting 40+ degrees in the afternoon. My goldenrod went by weeks ago. I really need to cut it back.
DeleteThat trumpet flower is gorgeous! I've read a China Mieville book (Kraken). It was the weirdest book I've ever read. I liked it, but WEIRD!!!!
ReplyDeleteWell, this one is right up there.
DeleteWhen my daughter was a little girl we always enjoyed drizzly and wet. We had umbrellas by the door and she would put on her little yellow boots and we’d go for a walk. At that time we bought a family pass annually to the zoo and we would wait for rainy days to visit since it would not be so crowded. That’s where she received her very earliest natural history education. Rain was our friend! I would think that in Texas where oppressive heat and drought are commonplace a walk in the rain would be very welcomed.
ReplyDeleteWarm drizzle, yes. Drizzle when it's cold you just end up being cold and wet.
DeleteYour flowers are so pretty. Hope you enjoyed the potluck! I'm going to one today with my high school friends.
ReplyDeleteI did! and everything was very good.
