side eye and laying low

We’ve been in a news blackout since shortly after the election. The TV is off until later in the day when all the ‘news’ shows are over. We’re not totally ignoring what’s going on, just sick of the appeasing in advance mainstream media who only seem to find fault with democrats. While I’ve been keeping a side eye on the republican creepy clown show and the devastation they plan once in office with not one appointee actually being qualified for the intended office (if you want to destroy something put idiots and enemies in charge), via social media accounts that refuse to appease and actually report what’s going on, I’ve not wanted to get down in the muck to write about it, for now at least, trying to enjoy the last few weeks of an administration that actually cares about this country and the people in it. Although I have to say that the thieving drunken rapist Hegseth getting his mommy to make phone calls and do interviews to tell everyone that, really, he is a very good boy and promises not to drink if appointed to head the vast military complex is the height of infantilism. What is this, the Romper Room? And he’s complaining that he’s being ‘Kavanaughed’. By that I guess he means people are pointing out his drunkenness. Well, Kavanaugh got the appointment so there is that.

It’s been cold here, dipping down in the 40s at night with highs varying from 40s to 60s and will continue in that vein so, yeah, it’s what passes for winter here. Our 5 days of predicted rain materialized one day of light rain and drizzle. Almost an insult. We do need rain.

Another busy day at SHARE yesterday. We filled 41 food orders, our second busiest day since I’ve been there I think. Our busiest day? The Thursday before Thanksgiving. I had not asked how many food orders we filled before I flew out to get to my mammogram appointment (which if you recall was postponed to the next day because their computer system went down), so I inquired yesterday. 61. Busiest day ever. For now. A year or two into the next administration might put that number to shame.

I haven’t been doing much otherwise, walking the dog, going to yoga. I’m working on a new drawing but I won’t post a picture yet because the person for whom it is intended reads here sometimes I think and I want it to be a surprise.

I don’t even have any good pictures to post. Here’s Cat laying on some paperwork I needed to fill out

and a garden spider who set up housekeeping over at Pam’s house.

  1. I don't watch much news either, altho, I do get 2 newsletters in my email so I do read a bit about what is going on. It sounds like all bad news from the incoming administration but of course, that is what they want.
That spider has an interesting web but I wouldn't want to meet him in person! ;)

    1. I like to see the garden spiders. They do a service catching bugs. I'm seeing some hints that maybe some republicans are maybe starting to stand up to Trump, tired of his bullying tactics. We'll see.

  2. I love the way orb spiders zip up their webs. I have quit the news, too, except for the glaring stuff like Hegseth and his mommy calling senators to praise how good her boy will be.

    1. it's disheartening to see the legacy media folding like a cheap tent fearing that Trump will come after them if they criticize him. what they don't understand is that giving into a bully only makes him more emboldened.

  3. For just a minute, I wasn't sure if I liked the spider or the cat more, but I finally came to my sense and thought, "Cat." I've always thought it perfect that the zig-zags that spider makes gave it the nickname "writing spider." The web decoration looks like the Palmer Method exercises we did when we were learning cursive in fourth grade. (Or maybe third or fifth -- I can't remember.) My place finally is down to 68 tonight. I haven't turned on the heat yet this fall, and it looks like I can avoid it for a while longer, although I saw a hint of "real cold" in the forecast -- maybe for later next week.

    1. out here in the country where things are spread out there's no insulation from other buildings from the wind and temperature. our heat is on during the day but we've been turning it off at night.
I love these big garden spiders. haven't seen one in a couple of years. in fact I've seen fewer small spiders this year than usual.

  4. That cat is really trying to assits you with the paperwork. Cats are so clever!
    And that spider looks beautiful.
I can relate to the urge of not getting into the news circus when feeling so distgusted and bruised and let down. I try to resist staying off it myself and religiously read three daily national papers (one very left wing, one middle of the road and one conservative) our local one and two international (Guardian, The Irish Times) - well, at least the headlines and a couple of articles more in depth. I have just been gifted an online subscription to the NYT and I am trying to find my way round it. A big concern for me is that people use social media channels as their only source of news and information. There is an enormous difference between strict journalism ethics and research rules as set by editorial boards etc. and online "journalism" as in fb or many podcasts. The difference between opinion, claim and fact doesn't seem to matter anymore. But there are tools like reverse image search and various fact checkers that I use more and more.
My daughter was a teenager when fb and its predecessors started to grow and I made sure she understood their standing and what the fourth column means to democracy and that social media cannot replace it. Now she is the one checking on us and warning us on social media echo chambers.

    1. I don't rely on FB for ny kind of news. the accounts I follow are independent journalists, some politicians, and lawyers who do their due diligence. legacy media here does not cover accurately what Trump does and says if they cover it at ll and that includes the NYT. their coverage of the campaigns were all about tearing down Harris and silence on what Trump said and did. they hounded Biden for weeks after one debate until he was finally forced to withdraw. they are already obeying in advance failing to accurately report what Trump plans once installed for fear of retribution, losing their certificates. what they don't understand is that giving into a bully only emboldens him. they are playing into this fascist's hands.

  5. The Garden Spider is beautiful, the situation in Washington not so much. The spider will stay beautiful but Washington is going to get a whole lot worse.

I think maybe Musk strutting around like he is the co-president might be wearing thin. rumor is there is a lot a discord at Mar A Lago.

  7. I used to listen to NPR and Reuters while I was getting ready for work but I haven't done it even once since the election. Now I'm listening (and trying to sing) Christmas music to strengthen my voice for choir. Cat is just lovely - I would want to bury my face in that fur (and then sneeze for about three days, but still...).

    1. NPR is on the radio in our car unless I get disgusted and switch it to music, some good ole rock and roll. but year, even NPR is sometimes pandering to Trump.

    1. I guess we'll see how much more being pushed around and bullied republicans can take. he thinks he can just issue an order and end birthright citizenship, plans to deport children born here from non-citizens. that would, of course, include himself and his children.

  9. Why do cats always lie in the least opportune places? I guess Cat knew where to go to get your attention!

  10. Yep, this morning he's talking about ending the 14th amendment with an executive order. In order not to separate families, he's going to deport children who are citizens. How thoughtful.

    1. I'm sure his son Barron and his other sons, Dumb and Dumber, who were born to his non-citizen wives will be spared deportation. He thinks that all he needs to do is issue an executive order but the only way it can be legally ended is through a constitutional amendment. that won't stop him from trying it anyway though so we have to count on the courts to stop him. one of the reasons Biden is trying to fill every vacancy before the end of his term.

    2. Codex: worse than that. He's going to deport the whole family (his words).
His wife is an immigrant from slowenia. Ivana was from the czech republic. Therefore in order not to separate families...just sayin'
