estate sale day

A little blog whine before I get to the subject at hand...I've been reading that people have been having trouble commenting on blogs and in fact my few I usually get are down as well along with my page views which are running about half what I usually see in my stats. So is this due to the whole Google+ thing or have I just been boring the pants off everyone?

Thursdays, as you may recall, are the days that my sister and I go to estate sales when there is one in the radius in which we are willing to travel. Last Thursday was one such in a very small community. It was basically a very big barn divided in two lengthwise, one side 'women's stuff' (household)

and the other 'men's stuff' (tools large and small)

and inside the small house. We didn't buy anything but lots of interesting stuff to look at. The deceased was a collector of train memorabilia

including these old lanterns which were very cool.

We weren't sure what the purpose of this was. Did it magnify the light from the lanterns?

Outside in the barn, among things like carnival glass, florist vases, and the usual detritus of a household was some collectible McCoy and Roseville pottery,

an assortment of cartoon cake pans,

this very cool light fixture of which only three of the six arms were intact (this actually tempted us severely wondering if they would sell us each just an arm which was easily detached but we resisted in the end),

and probably my favorite kitsch, this hand painted ceramic table decoration, Jesus with red lipstick.

  1. DRAG Jesus! I love it.
I might have been tempted by some of that pottery.
Do you feel disappointed or virtuous when you walk away having bought nothing?

    1. was I younger I might not have passed it up. and yeah, drag Jesus! I've only regretted not buying something a few times. Mostly it's not hard to pass stuff up. a lot of these sales are just what's left over after the family takes all the stuff they want. there was a gorgeous buffet for $400 at one. I'd have bought it except I already have one and no place to put another one. a really beautiful piece of furniture. it sold for half that the next day.

  2. I would have been extremely tempted by the two white flowers with the green leaves vase. That's really pretty. So far, for me, leaving comments on your blog is not a problem. What is the Google+ thing? Did they cancel another product?

    1. that was a McCoy I think as well as the one next to it. we were tempted by both of those but I already have too much stuff. had I been even 10 years younger I would probably have bought it one or the other. the far right was Roseville.

Google+ was a social media site that never really took off and they recently canceled it. Apparently it is causing all kinds of problems for people who used it or created an account and signed in with it.

  3. I have been going through a lot of trouble with Google and making comments on mine and other blogs for over a month. It changed from “Comment as (blog name)”to “Google account”. When I wrote a comment thru Google, it looked like it was publishing but then it never appeared. This was happening on my iPad but then I found out that I could still comment as before on my computer. Unfortunately for me though, My Retired Man sits in front of that all day and it was hard to get time on it. Now, after a lot of time and help and numerous curse words, MRM figured how to change it back on my iPad. He is my hero once again. I have no doubt that others are experiencing the same problem. Many people might have just given up. I was close to that.

  5. I am always looking for "pseudo" art deco vases. I cannot afford the real thing. But I stay away from such sales as my house needs a thorough cleaning and throw out! Regarding commenting, I cannot comment or reply on my own blog! I can comment on most others. It does have something to do with the death of Google+ because I am required to allow Google+ people to comment, even though the venue is dead. It is a mess and how will we know if we are boring people if they can't tell us?

    1. I went to my settings for comments and turned on the 'use Google+ comments' thinking that would allow Google+ people to comment but what it did was change my comments template and took away the reply button beneath each comment so I changed it back. I suppose that's what you did when your template changed. or is there another way to allow Google+ people to comment?

  6. I'm having the same problem - stats down by at least half. Would be nice if somebody fixed this!

  7. i have been having trouble commenting on your blog, and some others as well, but have now discovered that when i do my browsing in firefox instead of my usual safari, the trouble goes away. there's something happening with safari lately, that's making some of my regular sites wonky. i have no idea what it is. anyway, here i am, enjoying your estate sale tour.

    1. for some reason Safari is not supported on a lot of sites and hasn't been for some time. I tried Firefox but it was too wonky for me and generally just pissed me off. I use Chrome now and don't have any trouble.

  8. I still can only comment if the blog accepts anonymous commenters. I have to push the captcha things about ten times then it will publish anon. Most people don't want to use anon and I have to use it even to comment or reply on my blog. With blogging down so much because of instagram and twitter etc., you'd think google would be on it and have it fixed by now. It has been months in my case. My mac and iPhone say to keep using safari and I am not messing it up. I didn't change a thing when my comment problem started. I, like you, try not to buy any more shelf sitters. I still have too much stuff. Donna@gather

    1. I only use Safari on my phone. I switched to Chrome on the desktop and iPad. I let anonymous comment for various reasons. I just delete the occasional spam from anonymous but really, most the spam I get is not.

  9. Commenting has become a big, hot mess. After lots of machinations, I finally got comments coming to my email, but not everyone comes through. I have to remember to go in and check. I have to go to estate sales with a responsible adult. Those lanterns would have been irresistible!

  10. I haven't had any issues commenting, but I use my blogger account. I had a google + account, but never really used it either.

    LOVE drag Jesus!

  11. Some classic finds, I think one or two arms from the light would be fun as wall sconces

  12. I've had no issues commenting anywhere. Not sure about anyone else.

  13. Great stuff, I love these sales. They are never so well organised here, you have to sift and lift and get your hands very dirty. But I must stay away because we decided to declutter. As a rule. Not that we have started.

  14. People have mentioned commenting problems on my blog, too. I haven't had trouble personally, so I don't know what's going on. My stats seem more or less the same, maybe slightly down.

    I LOVE DRAG JESUS!

I definitely would have spent more time on the "women's" side of that estate sale. Which just shows how reliable those old tired gender stereotypes are.

    1. (I'm belatedly seeing that several other people also labeled him "Drag Jesus." I hate it when I'm late to the party.)

  15. Oh, my. I might have bit on some of that pottery. I've never been a huge fan of Roseville, but McCoy I love. As for commenting, I've seen some other blogger folks complaining. I comment here using my Google account, but I've never had a G+ account, and I think now I'm glad.

    1. I like Roseville as a general rule but that particular piece didn't a whole lot for me. The two McCoy vases were very tempting though.

  16. I just tried changing my commenting account to name/URL, so that my blog would show up, but it seems I can't do that.If I try to use name/URL, it says I'll show up as anonymous. That may explain why some people who don't have blogger blogs show up as anonymous.
