drama, so much damn drama

It has come to my attention that I inadvertently misrepresented the funds used for the new flooring at SHARE. The grant was specifically written to improve infrastructure and when asked if it could be used for food the company offering the grant said no. So it was use the grant for its intended purpose or not get it at all and the new flooring is nice, well, except for the carpet which is still ugly.

So if I gave the impression that SHARE would choose new flooring when it could be buying food with that money, let me say that would never happen. SHARE does great work in our community providing the less fortunate with food and clothing.

This will be the last time I write about SHARE though. One of the board members read my September 5th post about getting the new flooring and grant money (I did not know when I wrote that that the grant was specific to improving infrastructure) and took issue with that particular sentence. (I have since deleted that sentence.) Apparently this woman also cherry picked something from another post about people (me specifically I guess) taking stuff home that was donated and she made sure all the other board members were shown these excerpts and were properly outraged. I was making SHARE look bad. I never took anything donated by HEB or Walmart, all the day old bakery products and produce and prepared salads and stuff, that I wasn't allowed to take. We volunteers were encouraged to take what we wanted of that stuff by the director because this stuff in on the edge or just past when we get it and wouldn't last another week even if we had room in one of the refrigerators. Many of the volunteers took stuff including the particular board member crucifying me. Anything I took was either handed to me or at the end of the day after we had served the last client and it was take it or it would get thrown away or given to another volunteer for chicken food. 99% of the stuff I took at the end of the day was given to a neighbor who has custody of three of their young grandchildren. They think my writing about that made SHARE look bad but I didn’t write anything that wasn’t true. If I made SHARE look bad by writing about that then the problem wasn't me.

Two and a half weeks after this board member got everybody riled up the board met on Monday morning and in a near unanimous vote, they kicked me out. I didn’t find out about any of this until Monday afternoon when the director called to tell me I was no longer allowed to volunteer. I was kind of shocked speechless at first and asked if it would matter if I apologized and wrote a post clearing any confusion about the grant and the flooring. She said she would talk to the board members Thursday and let me know. But, you know, I had all night Monday night (couldn’t sleep because my brain would not let it go) and all day Tuesday to think about this. And this is what finally dawned on me.

I have volunteered there for 6 years. I showed up every week, I did my job, I didn't take anything I wasn’t given or allowed to take, I never once was rude or dismissive to any of our clients, and I got along, I thought, with the other volunteers. The board and maybe even other of the volunteers had been chewing on this for two and a half weeks. Not once did a single person consider me friend enough or had the common decency to come to me and express their concerns about some of the things I had written or even just given me a heads up that the knives were out. I was never given a chance to apologize, edit my posts, or otherwise try to make amends. I had no indication from anyone Thursday of last week that things were amiss and four days later they stab me in the back. Silly me, I expected better from a group run by churches, from religious people I have worked with for six years (and they wonder why church attendance is down). Aren't they supposed to be all about forgiveness?

I don’t know who they think reads what I write anyway. No one in Wharton reads it, even though I do post a new entry on FB I’m only connected to two people in Wharton on FB, one of whom is the board member that instigated my removal. She sent me a friend request shortly after she started volunteering and I accepted. Had I known more about her at the time I would not have.

So, yeah, I no longer am allowed to volunteer at SHARE and I don't think I would go back even if they changed their collective mind. No one cared enough about me to come talk to me before they cast me away. I don't know how I get over that. How do you work with people again that voted you off the island. I have to say though that the director stood up for me, she tried to calm them down at the meeting and then talked to them again on my behalf to no avail and she hated having to tell me of their decision.

  1. Good Lord. (Irony intended) While it's true that the same sort of dynamic shows up in HOAs, church councils, city councils, book clubs, Congressional committees, followers of various celebrities, and hospital staffs, it's the sort of thing that usually ends up with responsible people being rejected and gossip mongers being held up as paragons of virtue. You've given so much to SHARE: a fact that may become evident to other volunteers in the near future.

Go plant a flower, or spend some time on your art. Your blood pressure will thank you.

    1. This particular woman is somewhat of a bully. She's only been volunteering there for a couple of years and she has pissed a lot of people off going around telling them how they're doing their job wrong while doing nothing herself. I'm an outsider...wasn't born or raised there, I reject christian doctrine specifically and all religions generally, and vote democrat in this very red town so easy to dismiss me.

How unchristian in values. I'll be back on this one later, but I'm sorry this was done to you.
Someone told me recently that some churches are a corporate business. You did nothing wrong.
I volunteered at places. They always gave us a thank you gift in appreciation for our TIME. Small gifts. Left over travel mugs with the organizations advertising etc.

All non profits have that in a budget. And if I spent my valuable time there it's the least they can do. I've been offered little snacks water even meals if i helped at all day events. If it wasn't fun I have even left.

Worth 200billion. I know. Stunning white buildings in major cities. (and creepy)

    3. That's what I thought but does reflect how so many christians actually behave.

There are things we're allowed to help ourselves to, anything like a snack (candy, cookies, chips, granola bars) and things we are not allowed to take like any canned or packaged food donated or bought with grant money, especially meat. We get a lot of the day old loose and prepared stuff from the produce and bakery departments, a lot of which gets thrown away immediately because it's not in a good condition. I always waited until the end of the day to take anything but not everybody did.

  3. Sheesh, do they monitor all their volunteers' social media on a regular basis? Whose job on the Board is that? Sounds a bit Orwellian to me. Anyway, fuck 'em all. Use your newly freed up time to do some fun things for yourself now.

    1. No, I doubt if most those people are even on social media, all small town retirees. No, this was a hit job. This particular woman has appointed herself in charge, the only person she defers to is the director and bullies everyone else. I talked to a friend who knows her and she has done this every time she gets involved in some sort of committee. I'm an outsider...wasn't born or raised there, I reject christian doctrine specifically and all religions generally, and vote democrat in this very red town so an easy target. The flooring was her pet project and I criticized it.

You're a volunteer they shouldn't be reading your social media unless you signed an NDA?
    Hope you unfriended them?
They owe you an apology. You're a senior doing unpaid shifts, who does that to a senior?
Take whatever time you need for your peace of mind. SMH.

The flooring was her pet project and I criticized it.

    1. Yeah, I hope they are proud of themselves. Did absolutely nothing to raise my opinion of christians or religion in general. That woman was determined to get rid of me because for one, I'm an outsider...not native to this town, not religious, not a republican but mostly because the flooring was her pet project and I criticized it.

  8. Ellen, I think the best thing you could do is to say (to yourself, mostly), "Fuck you and fuck this, and fuck the fucking horse you rode in on."
I have been reading your blog for bazillion years and from your reports, I have only ever felt positive about SHARE. Except for the ugly carpet.
They're going to miss you and that's all there is to it. And if that's the sort of people they are, then you surely do not need to miss them.

    1. No, I don't miss them. I've known that I was not real friends with any of them, just someone they got along with doing a job once a week for 6 fucking years. But I'm an outsider...wasn't born or raised here, I reject christian doctrine specifically and all religions generally, and vote democrat in this very red town so an easy target. This woman is a bully, the flooring was her pet project and I criticized it. What really hurt is that the one person I am/was friends with who is also my neighbor and has had run ins with the woman himself knew this was going on for over two weeks and didn't tell me which I found out last Tuesday. I've kind of been avoiding him all week.

    1. I did go and talk to a friend of mine who has a background in counseling (we talked as friends). It seemed like a good idea Monday night but by the time I met with her on Tuesday I'd pretty much worked through it. Anyway, she's knows this woman well and this is something she does in any group or any committee she joins. She acts like she's in charge, she bullies anyone who doesn't agree with her alienating them until they quit or she gets rid of them. So, yeah, I'm good.

She's a bully and I criticized her pet project coupled with me being an outsider. Fucking small minded people in a small rural red town.

She acts like she's in charge, she's pissed a lot of people off, and I don't think she actually does anything. She doesn't interview clients, she doesn't sort clothing, she doesn't fill food orders, she doesn't help clients is any way. If she's not trying to bully someone she's sitting around on her phone.

  15. I only got good impressions of your SHARE group when you wrote about them, Ellen. I have even been thinking about joining a local food pantry near me because of your example. I totally understand how bad you must feel and especially since they didn't even give you a chance to speak up for yourself. It's their loss as you have helped them for so long.

  23. I feel your hurt over this betrayal and the fact that they seem to have ganged up to deliver the blow. Betrayal always hurts and I am sorry that you have to go through this. That being said, knowing you from your writing, I am sure you will put your big girl panties on and persevere with a different project. They will miss your willingness to work alongside them when they are faced with pulling the weight you pulled as well as their own! The term Christian does not impress me. I have witnessed Christians tearing each other apart, all the while proclaiming that THEY are Christians. I am of the opinion that if you have to tell people what a good Christian you are, then you are not as good as you think.

    1. Yeah, it did hurt. I knew I wasn't really friends with any of those people, had zero contact with any of them outside of Thursdays but still, you'd think they would come to me with their concerns so I could edit the offending posts (whatever they were because I've only heard vague references to 'taking stuff'). The one that hurt the most is the one friend I thought I did have, my neighbor. Not even he gave me a heads up. So I've kind of been avoiding him. He walks every day and I walk the dog and so we would encounter each other on the street a lot. Now that the weather has cooled off a bit, I'm walking Minnie earlier so I don't run into him.

You're justified in your pain. I think there's more going on there and it's not that you're an outsider. Bible thumper misrepresent scripture all the time. You won't change them. It was an ugly juvenile thing to do to you.

  25. Ellen, that is shocking. Even if they didn't like what you wrote, they should have come to you and asked you about it rather than simply firing you and THEN telling you about their decision. I'm so sorry this happened and I think they will miss not having you there.
