a week in the life

It’s starting!

Our week or so of cool mornings and not blistering days came to an end yesterday (last Tuesday). Hot and muggy already when I ventured out. Supposed to be the same today, Wednesday, but rain is predicted which we still really need so we’ll see how the day pans out (we did not get any rain). On Friday though, the first real ‘cold’ front comes in with highs in the 70s and lows between 51˚ and 48˚ for three days. Woohoo! Then for the foreseeable future, highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

Well, Thursday turned out to be a day. First I had a whole list of errands to run. I did the ones that I could take the dog with me first…taking stuff to the recycling center, the vet for flea treatment for Minnie, Tractor Supply for flea treatment for Cat and the three outside boys. Brought Minnie back and headed out for Hesed House to take the new shadow box and talk to Stephanie about volunteer opportunities and we considered a few ideas like tutoring or helping people with their reading and comprehension skills; from there to the Evil Empire for a few grocery items I can’t get at the HEB, and then last the liquor store.

And then Jade arrived for a visit and to pick up her cat from her parent’s house. She had just gotten back from a week in Utah for her best friend’s wedding and then she planned to visit the national parks but it rained all week so that was a bust. Instead she hung out with her friends and their families. We went across the street to visit with Robin and Harrison, Paisleigh was sleeping, until it was time to put Harrison down for his nap. When Paisleigh got up she came over here to visit her Aunty and they got out the coloring books and the crayons and markers. Did I take a single picture? No, I did not.

Now it’s Friday and the cold front is blowing in with gusts up to 40 mph, cold being a relative term here but it’s supposed to get down to 51˚ tonight. Neither the dog nor the cat like this overcast windy weather and are showing no interest in going out. Well, Cat is outside in the little backyard half hidden in the fern and ginger watching the birds at the bird feeder. Speaking of Cat, I knew we had a mouse because Tuesday night I opened one of the drawers in the kitchen and there it was! It scooted off the back of the drawer and into the bowels of the cabinet. I set up a trap that night which it ignored but Wednesday night during dinner there was a commotion in the kitchen and I jumped up in time to see Cat scurry off into my studio room/office where she let it go! She caught it again and then let it go again and this time it got away. Damn it Cat.

Saturday morning and it’s downright chilly enough for sweat pants and flannel shirts. Mostly what I’ve done all week is work on editing the book my friend is writing on pate de verre, finding inconsistencies in formatting or better word choices or misspellings or duplications or confusing instructions. I manage about an hour and a half a day and then send her a list of my corrections for her to use or not. Last night was one of my nights to cook dinner. Our regular dinner time is 7:30 but last night I wanted to make stuffed cabbage rolls from an actual recipe instead of just winging it like we usually do with meat, rice, tomato sauce. So because it was pretty involved and had to cook for 90 minutes I started about 3:30 right after starting the dishwasher which I had forgotten to do after breakfast. Cut the core out of the cabbage, put it in a large pot covered with water, bring to a boil for a minute or so, remove cabbage, peel off softened leaves, put cabbage back in the pot, repeat the recipe says. Except, cabbage floats! There was no covering it with water. Anyway, that’s how it started. Then I had to wait for the dishwasher to finish its cycle so I could get the pan we use for cooking rice which was also confusing. It called for 1/2 cup rice, cooked. Did it mean 1/2 cup of raw rice cooked or 1/2 cup of cooked rice? I went with 1/2 cup raw rice, cooked which took nearly an hour itself since we use short grain brown rice. I finally got it all in the oven and the kitchen looked like a tornado had swept through and dinner ended up being only about 20 minutes late. And it was really good but it may be one of those things I only fix once in a blue moon. Meant to take pictures but, oh well.

Today is Paisleigh’s birthday party. She turned 5 last Saturday but her mom, who moved from Arkansas to Corpus Christi so it’s much easier for the kids to be with their mom now that she’s only 2 1/2 hours away as opposed to Arkansas, had to work that day. This will be Paisleigh’s first birthday party that includes her classmates instead of just family and adult friends. She handed out invitations to everyone in her class, 20 something kids.

I’ve only taken four pictures this week, the one at top this morning and these last three; the underside of a big garden spider, an invasion of ants one morning in Minnie’s empty food bowl, and these two shredded toilet paper rolls from a beetle trapped in the cabinet (the beetle was unceremoniously tossed outside).

  1. Thanks for the description of stuffed cabbage. Way too many moving parts for me, who is a lazy cook. The ants and the tp shredding beetle are interesting, too much nature!

    1. I only cook twice a week, husband does it the other 5 and he is a lazy cook so I like to put some effort into my nights but not every time.

  2. Those ants are a plague and a pain but they sure look interesting in that picture. I've been getting the tiny black ones and in such numbers that they can make the corner of a plastic bag look solid black. And the little fuckers bite too. I finally laid down some ant bait and that took care of it.
We had our own first really cool morning this morning. I put on an undershirt kind of thing, a long sleeved cotton T-shirt, and two thrift store cashmere sweaters. It was probably about 57 degrees.

    1. The next morning they were a solid path against the baseboard under my sink. WTF. Sprayed them both times with some environmentally and pet friendly stuff and that's been the end of it for now.
We're back into the low 80s during the days, 50/60s at night. Warm but so much better than it's been.

  3. Lol. Welcome to my life. Too funny. First time I cooked kale. Where did it go?

Cat and mouse? WTH ARE YOU BRINGING IT INSIDE??????....poor thing was so happy to bring me something to play with. I'm the big dopey cat who only hunts cans and bags.

    1. Like that big bunch of mustard greens, is that all there is? I've never eaten kale.
Cat was inside and I was trying to get her to carry it outside when she let it go the second time and then lost it.

  4. Ugh, spiders and ants! And a not very helpful cat!

  5. Isn't this weather something? I haven't heard the AC come on all day -- thank goodness. Not only is this cooler weather pleasant, it's cheaper. If you hadn't said 'beetle,' I would have assumed the cat did in the TP. A friend has a cat that will go after a fresh roll like it's a scratching post; either that, or the beast just gets a kick out of destroying it. As for the ants, I finally got out for an hour with my camera today and paid the price for sitting on the ground: ant bites. At least I hope they're ants; they don't itch quite enough to be chiggers.

    1. So nice to have a chilly morning and a glorious day. We turned our AC off. Still off. The house is staying cool enough even though it's getting into the 80s during the day.
This is the second time a beetle has gotten into that cabinet and shredded a couple of rolls of TP.

    1. That's the second time a beetle has gotten into that cabinet and shredded a couple of rolls of TP. First, where do they come from and ow do they get into the closed cabinet and second, wtf beetle.

  7. I think the beetle was a frustrated artist with limited materials to work with! I am glad he was tossed outside, even unceremoniously, instead of being killed. At this time of year, here, stink bugs do their level best to get into the house, and we have been assiduously putting them outside when we see them. We can remain very good friends as long as we don’t live together!

    1. Oh, yes, everything gets tossed out though I have to trap the bees and wasps.

  8. Well that meal will never happen in our house because I Hate Cabbage. Growing up, coleslaw was often our "green" vegetable & I had to take one bite before I could have dessert. Blerg.

Happy Birthday to Paisleigh! I hope she had a good showing for her party & had a great time.

    1. Yeah, not a big fan of coleslaw but I like it cooked well enough. I have a couple of really good cabbage and sausage (or bacon) recipes.

  9. We were in Pearland, TX Saturday morning for my granddaughter's soccer game and we were so cold! Luckily, my son and his wife brought lots of blankets for us to wrap up in. Everyone blamed us for bringing the cold air from Chicago. ;) We enjoyed a visit to NASA Space Center in the afternoon.

    1. It was cold Saturday morning, even for you northerners. Warmed up now though.

  10. I've never heard of a beetle shredding toilet paper. Peculiar!

Hopefully the cat mortally wounded the mouse?

    1. Yeah, what attracts a beetle to the toilet paper besides being trapped in the cabinet with it. And also, yeah, I hope she mortally wounded it but judging by how fast it scooted away I fear not.

  11. We are having very bipolar weather here in SE Arizona. But at least the 90-110's are gone for the year. LOL

    1. Oh yes, thank you, no more 90s. We didn't break triple digits often but always high 90s with a feel like in triple digits.

  12. I like the spider picture. I tend to take pictures of creatures, too. We were in a frost warning, but it didn't happen. It did get chilly and I had to employ the central heat, but my rose bush is still blooming. The toilet tissue made me laugh. Beetles, you say, but I have it on authority that campers will do the same thing just trying to get a roll started!

    1. I have a picture of two grasshoppers getting it on but haven't posted it yet. It got down in the high 40s one night but we didn't turn on the heat, just piled on the blankets. Now it's warmed up to the 80s. So no AC, no heat. One of the few times of the year we need neither.
