I know better

I do, I know it’s never a good idea to invoke the gods, but apparently I forget or get a little cocky. I should not be telling people I don’t get sick because the child infected me. Actually, she infected Marc first and I guess he infected me. I woke up Monday morning with that feeling in my nose and throat that I was getting sick and it worsened as the day progressed. I only had one really bad day and night and that was Monday. Tuesday I felt some better and my nose had dried up but no appetite and no energy, achy, my face and right eye hurt. Better still on Wednesday but no real appetite and no energy though I did get the weekly grocery shop done. Consequently I’ve done little else besides read and nap all week, besides the grocery store I mean. I was hoping to feel completely well today but there’s still some lingering effects.

I ventured out in the yard today for the first time this week to a few little surprises; the first oxblood lily (also a sign of the changing season),

one little rain lily from the bit of rain we've been getting,

and when I went across the street to take a picture of the rangoon creeper flowers I saw this, the first time I have ever seen it make seeds.

I did get more work done on my little art project before I got sick. The three cattail elements are cut out and the foam core spacers cut out but I haven’t glued them to the cattails yet because I’m still working out the spacing since I only have three layers instead of four like the previous shadow box. I also started painting the background water and that’s as far as I’ve gotten. Next is finishing the background water and painting the heron. Maybe I'll get to that this weekend.

We’ve been getting a bit of rain, more than just a five or ten minute light shower but far from the sustained rain we need. At least I haven't had to go out and water some part of the yard and pots every day.

You may remember we put my sister’s house on the shop property summer of 2020. Six years later it had settled enough that the back door deadbolt no longer lined up and the front door was out of square and sticking so Tuesday and Wednesday Rocky and his helper were under the house adjusting the level. Both doors now open, close, and lock properly. Unfortunately, he had some bad news. Some of the piers of mortar block the house sits on are starting to lean and the dirt pad is hollowing out from water getting under there. The whole house, every pillar, needs to be redone. They set the mortar blocks directly on the dirt pad which was built up higher than the surrounding yard to prevent water from getting under the house instead of on 3” thick 18" square concrete pads which should have been put down first. Aggravating that, my sister planted a row of crinum lilies across the front right up next to the house

which over time have compromised the slope of the dirt pad and the hurricane in 2024 didn’t help any. So, all those bulbs need to be dug up and moved, each pier needs to have the dirt built back up and be rebuilt with a concrete pad first. Yay!

SHARE is closed today and we were all supposed to show up Wednesday to start moving everything out so the flooring people could start on Monday. Obviously, I did not go yesterday, but I talked to my neighbor on Tuesday who also volunteers and he and another volunteer had gone there over the weekend and it only took the two of them 2 or 3 hours to completely clear out the back food area; all the baskets of canned goods, all the boxes of other food, all the shelving, all the tables, the three freezers and the refrigerator. I might go over there after breakfast and check it out or not. I am curious so maybe.

Apparently my curiosity is not enough to make me actually leave the house.

Same. Everyone is sick. I'll be back when I sound and feel like a human being.

  2. Who will do the leveling work on the house? It sounds laborious. Hope you are recovered by now.

    1. Yes, feeling much better. My contractor guy, Rocky. He can do the work and as a friend and neighbor, he's very fair in what he charges me.

  3. So sorry about the creeping crud. One of the joys of children. Glad you decided to stay in again. The cattails looks wonderful. I look forward to seeing the finished product.

    1. Been awhile since I've been sick. But yeah, elementary schools are little germ factories. I'm dragging my feet on the project. Can't really go forward until I paint the heron head.

  4. Sorry you've been sick - children are so very generous with their crud! I wouldn't leave the house either - you'll get over there to check it out soon enough.

  5. I remember those oxblood lilies. Despite our rain, I still haven't seen a 'regular' white rain lily, but I've not been out in areas where I usually see them. We have been getting regular rain this week. Granted, it's come a quarter inch at a time here, but it's been enough to perk things up. Sorry you're not exactly perky. I'm thinking it might be time to get my flu shot; it's the only one I get, but it apparently has been useful. Of course, I'm not around schoolkids or crowds, and that helps.
Your cattails look splendid against that background. The addition of the heron will add to an already lovely piece.

    1. I'm mostly well now. Would help if I had not been working outside for the past three days but I felt well enough to get some stuff done out there. I don't get the flu shot but I did finally submit to the pneumonia vax and I guess I'll get the RSV, both one and done. I'll get the covid booster later because I really don't want to ever get that.

Two more oxblood lilies have popped up but what I'm really excited about is my little yellow rain lilies are popping up.

  6. We've had the same illness (a cold?) going through our house. One day we start to think we are better but then the next we feel sniffly and tired again. I think it's almost gone. (Fingers crossed).

    1. My PC doctor told me they're seeing a lot of something new, not the flu, not RSV. I don't know if that's what this was. It felt like a regular cold, acted like a regular cold except that lingering not quite well feeling has lasted longer than it does with a regular cold.

Cov is theoretically a cold which is what you probably had especially when you're not prone to them. Just rest let your body do it's job.

    3. Definitely not covid. No respiratory distress, no cough, no sore throat, no fever. One day of a runny nose, one day of sinus ache. If it walks like a cold, talks like a cold, it's a cold.

  7. It's such a shock to get sick when you hardly ever get sick. I figure that at this age I've built up an immunity to almost every little virus in the world but of course this is not so. But it feels insulting somehow to find that yes, you are human and as such, vulnerable to the things children are so apt to bring home.
    REST!
Love the cattails. They're definitely looking good.
Now- as to those crinum lilies. Damn. But I probably would have planted something there too.

    1. I know, right? I'm sick? I never get sick! Unfortunately those nasty little bugs keep evolving.
Pam had those crinum lilies across the front of her house she sold only they were in a raised brick flower bed. And I'm the one that planted the morning glory bush there.

  8. Hope you will recover promptly. At least there are books and comfortable places to lounge it out.
I enjoy very much following your progress with this artwork, looking so good.
The thing with your sister's home is, well, grrrr.

    1. I'm mostly well, maybe completely well. Just that last lingering feeling of not quite well lasted more days that usual for a cold. But then maybe that's because for the last three days I've been out in the heat and humidity getting yard work done. When I finally came in yesterday about 1 pm my husband asked me if I was trying to get heat stroke.

  9. Children are little germ carriers and very generous, giving some to everyone. Too bad we don't have a pipeline to move those flood waters to the dry areas. We have had more than our share of rain here, but we are not apt to flood at this elevation. Of course we could slide down in a mudslide. Hope you start feeling better soon, in the meantime enjoy the rest!

    1. Sometimes I think Wharton has an invisible dome over it. It rains to the north of us and the south of us. So frustrating. We did finally get a decent rain but not nearly enough. I'm feeling much better and probably would have a few days sooner if I hadn't had enough of rest and been doing some much needed maintenance in the yard the past few days.

  11. Certainly not good news on your sister’s house. I hope it doesn’t get worse.

  12. Well, you've been ill, so you have a good reason for defeating your curiosity! That's a bummer about your sister's house. I hope it turns out to be less complicated than all that. Are you going to rent it, or do something else with it? Wasn't there a plan for a granddaughter to stay there, or am I making that up?

The heron shadowbox is looking good!

I wonder if the rangoon creeper will re-seed?

    1. My granddaughter does live in the house. She had been living with her parents and when my sister died we asked if she wanted to move in free of charge to take care of the house but mostly my sister's two cats who are inside cats. I don't do inside only cats and didn't really want to move them to my house. So it's worked out well.
