a nest in an unlikely place and other doings

Believe it or not I do proofread my posts before I publish and still they escape me. Last post, it should have been ‘garden’ soil not ‘green’ and spring grasses and ‘weeds’ not ‘winds’. Besides the spring grasses and weeds these warmer days have also brought the fire ants back up to the surface. Oh joy.

The other day I walked into my studio room/office and startled a wren in the house and out it flew through the open door to the little backyard. This is not an unusual occurrence in the spring when I have the door open and no screen as they are curious little birds and they like to build nests in places like the garage and barn. The last day or two I’ve noticed some dried plant material on my desk and the floor, not a whole lot and I thought maybe it had come in on Cat. Yesterday morning I happened to look up at the light fixture above me to see this…

I climbed up on the desktop to get a better look.

Wouldn’t it be cool if she did lay eggs and hatch some babies except, you know, it’s indoors and access to the outside is limited and then there’s a resident cat who would be happy to pounce on the little fledglings.

I finally got out there Friday and started working on two of the garden plots. Didn’t get the all the weeds out of the bigger one but got three fourths done. I saw that one of my clumps of narcissus finally decided to bloom.

I was going to spend the rest of the day doing what I really want to do which is work on the current mobile but that didn’t happen, only spent about a half hour and then it was more outside work; fertilize and water all the pots, use an organic poison on the fire ant mounds and water that in, walk the dog, feed the outside cats, and fix dinner which was a sort of cheaters cabbage roll casserole. I already had ground beef, onion, celery, garlic in the freezer left over from stuffed bell peppers so I chopped some cabbage and sautéed it, added in the meat mixture and some of my tomato sauce from last year, put it all in a baking dish, covered it with leftover mozzarella and baked it for about 20 minutes.

Yesterday morning after breakfast I went across the street and worked on cutting back stuff for about an hour and so another big pile to be moved to the burn pile. Spent the rest of the day finishing the armature for the bigger mobile and trying to arrange the crystals to get a balance in weight and shape. Harder than it seems as I spent hours moving them around from spot to spot and finally had to make two adjustments to the armature, replacing one of the arms completely and adding an extension to one end.

Still not completely happy with it so I imagine I’ll be futzing around with it again today and since it turned cold again last night, currently in the 40s, I won’t be distracted by the outdoors. Maybe. It’s a pretty day, cloudless blue sky and it will warm up. At the very least I should gather up some of the piles and if not get them to the burn pile at least get them in the back of the truck.

  1. I like the mobile - that will be nice when the sun hits it. I wonder how many attempts the bird will make to nest in that light fixture.

    1. I've made 6 so far, all hanging in windows. I won't keep them all.

I didn't think she would be back but it looks like she has added to the nest.

  2. The mobiles you’re making are lovely. Would you just never turn on the light to allow the effort at nesting to continue?

    1. Pretty much. I didn't think she would be back but it looks like she's added to the nest. It's only warm enough to keep the door open in the afternoon.

  3. Codex: The mobiles are a wonderful idea. Is it possible to turn them into a chandelier? Or too heavy? Left you a few comments before.
A nesting wren would be cool to experience.

    1. Chandelier with lights? That's a whole other endeavor and beyond my interest. It would be funny though since they all came from old chandeliers.

    2. Codex: No lights just bigger.

  4. Friends had a wren who nested in a bathroom light fixture and had to fly out through their bedroom to the unscreened window. They didn't have cats and just didn't use that particular bath until the babies fledged. Then they acquired a window screen and scrupulously kept it closed in nesting season.

    1. I've had them next in my garage and raise babies. I usually find at least one abandoned nest every year in there.

  5. That would be cool to have nesting wrens in the house if you didn't have to worry about homicide. I can't wait to see the mobile set up!

  6. Yes, exciting but impractical to have the wren nest indoors. Still, really sweet. Imagine them singing to you while you work. You sure had a productive day!

    1. I had one nest in the window sill of my kitchen window when I lived in the city so I got a perfect view of the eggs, hatching, feeding and fledging.

  7. The nest is adorable in the gentle pinkness . LOVE what you are doing with the crystal drops.

    1. They've been fun and satisfying hand work. I've got enough for a couple more and then I think I'll be done with it. I have 6 finished.

  8. I read my blog posts, too, but still the odd mistake goes undetected. My wife always reads them as soon as they are published so a second set of eyes scans for errors. Emails is a different story! I hit “send” far too quickly.

  9. I love that light fixture and if I were a wren, I would want to make a nest in it too. I've had them try to make nests in kitchen cabinets on dishes before. They are funny little creatures.
Your mobiles are going to be gorgeous! I can only imagine how difficult it must be to get things balanced. It's far harder than it looks!

    1. It came out of my old house in the city, one of the original glass shades. I had a similar blue one which disappeared over the years (at least I think I had a blue one). It doesn't really fit on the fixture here but I made a work around.

So far 6 and enough to do a couple more.

    1. Thanks. I've got all six (so far) hanging in windows. They won't all stay. I'll keep one, might give one to my granddaughter, and the rest will go to the Hesed House market.

  11. You are always beating back the tide of nature there, aren't you? I guess stuff grows quickly in your part of the world!

I'm sure that little bird thinks she's found the perfect spot, but it seems like it would be awfully bright in that nest!

  12. I remember many birds nesting on the front porch of the camp store. I miss playing with baby birds! I doubt any birds would be making nests low enough for me to see with all these cats! Kevin keeps stalking the turtle. Bet he would not like having his nose bitten!!

  13. How much are you selling the crystal mobiles for? I could maybe drive up and get a few.
