I hate people. People are assholes. Someone dumped a black dog here Sunday night.
It spent all day over in the shop yard on Monday. It’s a fairly big dog, looks like it has some black lab but not as stout and has really long legs and looks to be in good health. When Mikey tried to run it off yesterday evening it growled at him when he got too close. But I can’t have a stray dog living in the shop yard. Paisleigh comes with her dad sometimes on the weekends when he’s working on a car and Robin is afraid of it. Not to mention Minnie and I going over there to work in the yard and feed the outdoor cats.
Mid morning Tuesday it was over in the yard on the opposing corner next to my house so Robin and I closed the gates to the shop. Problem is there’s about a 14” gap so we secured a piece of sheet metal across the gap and chicken wire above that in case the dog tried to jump over the top of the sheet metal. So yeah, now the dog can’t get in but people and cars can’t get in or out either. I can probably engineer a more user friendly barrier with just the chicken wire but I need some bungee cords (accomplished on Wednesday).
So far it has not discouraged the dog. First it went and hung out under the carport of the house on the opposite corner but when I got back from the grocery store it was laying in front of the gate in the shade and is still there. He was over here earlier. I think whoever dumped him has a car like mine because when he saw me driving by on my way to the grocery store he got up and started following me and again when I was coming back. Even though he growled at my grandson, he is friendly enough and looking to be with people. The six year old girl, who is fearless and who lives at the other end of the street, was at this end playing with the little girl who lives at this end and coaxed the dog to her, petting him, tail wagging. He followed her home but was back in front of the shop gate this morning.
I feel sorry for the dog, the poor thing is confused and afraid, but I already feed four outdoor cats thanks to my sister and one feral cat and I have a dog and cat of my own and am not looking to adopt a big dog. And before anyone suggests calling animal control, there is no animal control here in this low population rural county. I have emailed the local animal rescue group but they are usually overwhelmed with strays and in fact they just called me back, they aren’t taking any adult dogs and the best they could do is partner with me to have him euthanized.
It just pisses me off when people dump their animals instead manning up and surrendering them to a shelter. Cowards, they are just fucking cowards.
Early afternoon - I saw the dog trotting down the cross street mid morning and haven’t seen him since.

So I called the vet early Monday morning and the earliest they could get Minnie in was 3 pm. They took x-rays and she doesn’t have a fracture. She chipped a piece off the end of one of the bones in that joint on her leg. How the hell she managed that is anyone's guess. The chip is still in there somewhere though it didn’t show up on the x-ray. The vet said it would cause more damage to the joint trying to get it out than just leaving it in there. So they put her under and fixed her up with a splint which looks more like a cast. The vet says while the bone won’t grow back of course it should heal by forming a sort of callous around the injury and she should be fine. She has to wear the splint for two weeks.
She was pretty loopy the rest of the day and was clearly uncomfortable with this big clunky thing on her leg she didn’t know how to maneuver.
She did a lot of quiet whining when we went to bed Monday night until she finally settled down and fell asleep sometime in the wee hours. Consequently I didn’t get much sleep last night either. But Tuesday morning she was much better, learning how to walk with it, thumping around like Peg Leg Pete, doesn’t seem to be in any obvious pain. And the dog has learned nothing. We were in the big backyard when the black dog came down the driveway. I didn’t see it but Minnie did. She took off after that dog barking the whole time and chased it back to the street. Dog!
Poor Minnie! You're right, people are assholes and there is a special place in hell for those that dump animals. Drop the doggo off at the local shelter. Not that hard.
ReplyDeleteRight? They know what they're doing is wrong, giving up their dog, and don't want to have to face someone while doing it.
DeletePoor thing. Put to death for no reason of its own. Such sadness, every single place anymore.
ReplyDeleteI would never be a party to that.
DeleteSo the black dog just runs wild until it gets hit by a car or starves? Is there a Facebook group or any place you can put up a notice for a free dog? Could the vets office recommend a place? I guess you would know but it seems so sad.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately the sole animal rescue group already has adult dogs they can't find homes for. And I can't foster him long enough to try and find a home for him. I haven't seen him since he trotted off like he knew where he was going since Tuesday anyway so perhaps he did.
DeleteCodex: He might be on a doggo adventure. Call up some rescue groups that are farther. Many will drive thousands of miles to pick him up and see if he's chipped.
ReplyDeleteI suppose all thinks considered good news about yours.
Maybe so. He trotted off like he knew where he was going on Tuesday and I haven't seen him since.
DeleteWhen my parents lived in Arkansas, people were always dumping dogs there. My Dad would take them to a local vet who did something with them. People who dump dogs deserve a lot of pain. I feel bad for Minnie, two weeks in that cast is a lot.
ReplyDeleteThe vets here won't take them. They'll scan them to see if they're chipped but you can't just hand them over.
DeleteMinnie spent Tuesday and Wednesday trying to chew it off and I had to retape parts of it but she seems resigned now and gets around pretty well. It's funny to watch her swing that back leg around.
There are people who love their animals and take care of them, and there are people for whom animals are momentary trophies and objects of fleeting enjoyment, even status symbols. Affection, care, humane treatment and other noteworthy sentiments mean nothing, nor does the fate of the animal. Years ago I owned a summer cottage and every year people would bring a kitten and at the end of summer when closing up for the winter just turn it loose. The result was a whole colony of feral cats living at the local dump in the most miserable conditions imaginable. Ah, humans! Such a lovely species!
ReplyDeleteSome people get dogs for all the wrong reasons, have no understanding of the nature of dogs.
DeletePeople here leave unwanted dogs tied to the railings of the ramps of the motorways, it's the worst place as you can imagine. Every place we have been living and travelling, we found and fed unwanted kittens, cats, puppies, fully grown dogs. In Spain I went to the vet on my last day with four cats in the back of the car to get them neutered at least.
ReplyDeleteI hope this one's story will have a happy ending. All the best for little Minnie.
My sister got Momcat fixed with the help of the local rescue group and then she died leaving me to deal with the three kittens that she had been feeding. I got no help from the rescue group for them but did manage to get them fixed. Now they are sweet boys who live under her house, while Momcat roams around. I think she is being taken care of by someone on the next street over because when I walk Minnie I often see her there. As for the dog, he trotted off last Tuesday like he knew where he was going and I haven't seen him since.
DeleteSo. The literal black dog has arrived at your door.
ReplyDeleteWell, damn.
People are assholes. Who would just dump a dog? Or a cat? I'm pretty sure that's how we got Maurice. No wonder the poor thing has deep trust issues. I wouldn't know what to do with a dog that someone dumped. I really do not want any more dogs ever. I don't think we have animal control here in our county. Not sure about that, though.
And I surely don't know what you should do.
I hope that Minnie's leg heals quickly and well.
Yeah, I do not have the desire or wherewithal to take care of a dog while trying to find his owner or a new owner and then end up with the dog. fortunately the dog solved the problem for me. He trotted off down the street on Tuesday like he knew where he was going and I haven't seen him since.
DeleteThat makes me so mad. Hopefully he finds a good home somewhere. And silly Minnie - of course she's going to just keep being herself. Ha!
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen the dog since Tuesday so either he went home or someone picked him up. And Minnie, so funny to watch her get around with that splint.
DeleteI have a country-living friend who often has cats dumped at her place. There's an animal control department that would pick them up, but she has to catch them first. She's 96 and not so spry; that's the first issue. Consequently, she's become the county cat lady, by default. I laughed at that last photo of Minnie. I can only imagine what she's thinking about all that, but she clearly has adapted -- at least, to a degree.
ReplyDeleteMinnie has figured out the splint. She will jump down from stuff like the couch but can't jump up on anything. She went down the six steps over at my sister's house before I could grab her. I thought she was going to fall head first but she made it down. I'm already feeding 5 cats not counting the one I have. Fortunately they live over at my sister's house. The three boys. Momcat spends a lot of time at a house on the next street over. The feral black cat doesn't go far. So really I guess four cats.
DeletePoor black dog. I wish there was a good solution. He obviously is looking for his people. I just don't understand how someone could dump a pet that way.
ReplyDeleteAnd poor Minnie -- but at least she has you! My dog Herman had a cast like that for a broken leg when I was a kid -- I remember it vividly.
The dog trotted down the street like he knew where he was going on tuesday and I haven't seen him since so maybe he went home or someone picked him up because he's not in the area anymore.
DeleteMinnie has adapted well to the splint. She's getting around very well and has stopped trying to chew it off.
People can be cruel 💔 😔 and irresponsible. Bless Minnie's heart.
ReplyDeleteI had a moment of weakness recently when meeting a six-month-old rescue dog -- after all, I *could* give a home to a dog who needs one, and there are so many ... but thank gawd the moment passed and I still have no pet to be responsible for. I like the personal freedom of that, and can commune with other people's affectionate pets instead. I have learned to respect my limitations and desires. We have cats turn up, stray or dumped, and we feed and shelter them in the farmyard, but I pray no stray dog appears.
