Coincidently, I posted my last blog entry on Tuesday late afternoon and Wednesday morning this showed up in my email inbox.
This is how this country has decided to deal with the epidemic gun violence here. No attempt to address the causes of gun violence in an effort to reduce it, no, instead they have decided the right approach is to give seminars on how to prepare for an active shooter occurrence. As if anyone can prepare for a thing like that. If you're within range when it starts you'll be dead by the time you realize what's happening. So fucked up. And cops getting shot too. There's been four or five in Houston in as many days, at least one dead, maybe two. Just another result of our Republican governor's all guns all the time policies; no permit needed to carry, no restriction or registration of firearms, no limit, determined to take us back to the days of the wild west. Shoot 'em up, cowboy. Yippee ki yo ki yay! This is Texas after all where lawlessness reigns. The other day a little fender bender, cars pulled to the side of the road, dude pulls his gun and a guy ended up dead. It's a race to see what kills more of us, guns or covid because no public health measures allowed here. Doesn't matter which epidemic kills us to the governor who apparently doesn't think there's enough dead Texans yet.
OK, letting go now.
I got the second attempt at the latest crown on Wednesday. It's the old style steel with the porcelain coating and the very strong tenacious glue they used to use so we'll see. So far so good.
Also Wednesday Robin went back to work since she's tested negative for covid and so now that she had to give her sister her car back, I'm taking her to work again. Which is good because it gets me up and moving since I've been so lazy lately.
The sun finally came out, sky cleared up about 3:30 yesterday and today was cold this morning but warmed up to a really nice and sunny day but it's already clouding up again. Not too busy at SHARE today, some new volunteers. Walked the dog the long walk and that is all I accomplished beside pulling up another handful of clover from around the bluebonnets in the front. I'm getting a little restless maybe enough to at least empty the truck load of fallen branches onto the burn pile tomorrow.
fingers crossed that you do not get shot and that your crown stays put.
ReplyDeleteFortunately I moved out of the city 15 years ago.
DeleteThe way the flyer's written. They don't care about logic and spelling either. I guess this is a performative event -- look, we're doing something! And it includes lunch!
ReplyDeleteThe crown is certainly continuing to make its presence felt. Let's hope this one stays put.
Are your bluebonnets blooming yet? I know you had one, but it seems a little early for patches of them. On the other hand, I saw some sunflowers, or something, along a fence to day. I'm going back tomorrow, camera in hand, to see what it was that I saw. The little buttercups are coming up in yards now, too -- but I hear we've got more cold weather on the way. No matter for the buttercups or bluebonnets. They'll do just fine. I'm glad the crown's holding. You deserve a little good luck in that area!
ReplyDeleteJust the one though the plants are really getting big. If I leave the clover it overwhelms the bluebonnets making them leggy.
DeleteJust thinking about an "active shooter" training makes me a little sick to my stomach. Can't we just have normal lives anymore and not be afraid of violence all the freakin' time? It's really crazy in our country. I sometimes wonder where Roger and I would move if we left the country.
ReplyDeleteI hope all goes well for you and the new crown. I've got some dental work looming in my future.
"All-to-common"? I realise it's Wharton, but still... And this reminds me of "duck and cover" drills in the 1950's as an effective response to a fucking nuclear explosion.
ReplyDeleteAmazing... Texas has got to be the most dangerous state in the Union. (Sadly, I have family that live there!!!) Sad and sick. :/
ReplyDeleteI don't know if we're the most dangerous in terms of gun violence. These mass shooting happen everywhere. It's a national epidemic. The NRA and the republican party has convinced half the people that a gun is the solution to everything that pisses you off.
DeleteFingers crossed that your crown holds!
ReplyDeleteI just don't get these people who think the solution to a person with a gun is another person with another gun. That's an amplification of the problem, not a solution.
I have no words.
ReplyDeleteProfanity does come to mind when you read notices like that. Your governor is dangerous. Stay safe, Ellen!
ReplyDeleteAbbott is a horrible human being. The only regulation he wants in this state is regulation of women's bodies. Our attorney general spends all his time and our tax money suing the federal government.
DeleteThis country has lost its way. I guess half of the population can't parse a sentence or hold two thoughts at the same time, so they're easy prey for the right wing.
ReplyDeleteFirst ruin public education, then start fear mongering, then accuse the other side of wanting to take away the guns you were convinced you needed to be safe, and here we are. There is rot in the heart of this country.
DeleteA "Lunch & Learn w/a box lunch & a $10 admission fee?" Seriously? What the h*ll good will that do when gun ownership is a free for all and every lunatic that carries one feels that shooting someone is the only solution. Abbott and the Texas Republicans are seriously dangerous.
ReplyDeleteRight? It's like they have no concept of cause and effect. There's a church here that held a raffle half the prizes of which were guns. In fact any group that has a fundraising raffle here the prizes include guns and not just hunting rifles. went to an estate sale once where there were half a dozen or so guns being offered. No background checks, no waiting period, no restrictions whatsoever. All you needed was the money they were asking.
DeleteDo they serve drink with that lunch? I cannot imagine any other way to learn.
ReplyDeleteSheesh. At least it's sort of funny that they sent it to YOU. But really it's just effing crazypants.
ReplyDeleteI need to drive someone to work to get me up & going every day. Oh wait, I drive myself to work & that's not really helping...
A box lunch for ten bucks to learn how to buy your own gun and be the hero to shoot the active shooter. This makes me sick. So what. Your governor is not about to become an enlightened person for me. Geeze, he could even stay a republican if he would become enlightened, educated. Like back in the fifties and sixties.
ReplyDeleteThis makes my head explode.
