just stuff

My apologies for the unsettling image of the snapping turtle. It didn't occur to me that some people might find it unpleasant. It didn't bother me and I got to thinking about it. I certainly wouldn't have posted an image of a dead cat or dog or any mammal with it guts hanging out. So why didn't the turtle hit that note with me? It probably came up out of the East Bernard river via Peach Creek or Baughman Slough, both of which are drainage tributaries to the river and there's a drainage slough that cuts diagonally through the neighborhood, cuts through the property behind the shop to the big culverts under road that our streets dead end into and then cuts across the corn/cotton field and into Baughman Slough. I've heard that this is part of Peach Creek, or was, before the Army Corp of Engineers redirected it. I could be wrong about this. My neighbor Gary tells me that another neighbor found the turtle in his yard and they moved it to the ditch at my end of the street where it climbed back out and was purposely run over. Had to be on purpose because it was in the grass on the side of the street. People suck. Fucking fuckers.

Well, the sun finally came out and we've had three days in a row with no rain and temps soaring into the high 80s. The ground is so saturated that there is still water in some ditches and the mosquitoes are still just as bad and I finally broke down and bought one of those home yard foggers you hook up to your hose but I haven't used it yet. Maybe today.

My arm/shoulder is almost completely pain free. I have no idea why. Monday at yoga we did a pose that put pressure on the shoulder and Tuesday morning it felt a lot better and even popped a little bit so I added that to my daily routine and Wednesday we did it again and during the night the shoulder gave a big pop at one point when I was shifting my sleeping position. Thursday morning and today it feels pretty damn good so I guess whatever was getting pinched or compressed has been relieved. Just a little residual soreness. I hope.

I don't really have much to report, was out of pocket and mind for two days.

I picked the big butternut squash yesterday and noticed another vine was putting on a third one. This has grown with absolutely no help from me from seeds I tossed in the compost pile.

And last night Minnie had me laughing so hard. There's a pillow on the couch and she burrowed into the pillowcase and then she had the pillow jumping around while she tried to get out. She finally wormed her way out and was sitting there looking at me with just her head looking over the pillow and when I tried to take a picture she turned her head refusing to look at me no matter how much I coaxed.

She was not amused.

  1. The butternut has such a strong will to survive! Minnie is a clever pup- She realizes that you were laughing at her genius so , no cooperation with face shot. Nope. You must settle for a dignified profile shot. Glad to hear that your shoulder is feeling so much better, almost new! You go, yoga girl!! Well done.

So glad you have had a break in the rain. Hope it continues for a few more days.

  3. People who purposefully run over turtles are the reason why my sister and I have formed the "I Hate People" club. We take turns being president of it. Fucking fuckers!
Glad to hear you have sunshine there. That's great news for the garden and everything else that likes to grow. Yay!
Wonderful news about your shoulder. Yay!!!

  4. I'm glad your shoulder is feeling better! I was afraid that someone had run over the turtle on purpose - I knew some guys in high school who would have thought that was hilarious. Fuckers is right!

  5. Hurray for the shoulder recovery.

Are turtles in your neighborhood released pets or native animals? Or semi native, i.e. not originally from there but can survive in the climate without humans?
Not here but there are regular turtle sightings in ponds and parks when people who had enough of their boring pet just drop them.
Once made the mistake to bring the daughter and her cousins to a turtle reserve in France while on one of these too long too much family holidays and it turned out to be a rescue place with lots of moral messages about the secret life of turtles, how they can only thrive in company and what eating lawn grass does to their brains and it just went on and on.

  6. Yay! You fixed your shoulder by yourself!
Glen just killed a rattler right by our back steps. Damn. I hate that. The little boys were here and we were right by it when I saw it.
    Unsettling.

  8. You caught her messing up. How unsettling--for Minnie.
I guess I can believe some bastards ran over a turtle for the pleasure of killing it. May their radiator blow up.

  9. Very glad to hear that your shoulder is feeling much better. I can just imagine Minnie and the pillow case episode. Dogs sure bring a lot of love and laughter into our lives:)

  10. Poor Minnie, now her pride's taken a dent.
Around here most turtles are irritated snappers, best avoided. They're so rarely seen on roads that I don't think I've ever seen one hit.

  11. LOL, she saw you laughing. Her post pillow dance dignity is certainly captured in your photo however.

  12. Dogs are funny. Olga gets like that sometimes -- looks away from me no matter how much I call her. That's terrible about the turtle being purposefully run over, but I must admit that was my suspicion.

  13. We have a lot of turtles run over here, but most are accidents. There are too many roads that cross creeks, and when the turtles are nesting, or heading to the mud for the winter, it happens. There's a woman in town who specializes in repairing turtle shells. I was astonished to learn that fiberglass can be used -- as long as there aren't serious internal injuries, they can be released -- I guess after the epoxy hardens!

  14. Your dog is jut like a teenager when it comes to photos! Lovely yard and glad the rain has stopped. Today we are getting tons and even more tomorrow, but we need it greatly.n I have a friend that rescues turtles and even raises some for release, so your photo, while tragic, was not unnerving.
