the cat, the studio, and fall bloomers

I don't know what's going on with Emma. Wednesday was the last day she ate or I saw her drink water or pee besides what food and water I forced down her. And then Thursday and Thursday night she had several episodes, kind of a cough or a gak followed by a sneezing fit, something she has never done before, even woke me up Thursday night and Friday she didn't even want to go outside, just kind of hiding between Marc's desk and the wall. Anyway I called the vet on Friday to see if I could bring her in because...not eating, drinking, peeing (since Wednesday), or pooping (since Monday) but they couldn't see her til next Monday afternoon, three days later. So I dithered a little bit and then called the other vet in town, explained what was going on and they said to bring her in.

This is a much bigger outfit than my regular vet but they were really nice and I nearly swooned when the vet came in...good looking young man, black hair a little longish, gorgeous blue eyes, that was all I could see because of course we were all wearing masks, very attentive. So he examined her, listened to her heart and lungs which he said sounded fine, no way to know what was going on with her other organs without blood work but she didn't have diarrhea and wasn't throwing up which he would expect to see if there was a problem there. We settled on subcutaneous fluids, a B-12 shot, a med to stimulate her appetite, and a pain med. So Saturday, still not eating on her own but Friday night she peed and pooped so those systems seem to be working as long as I can get enough food and water down her. It's worrisome, not just the not eating thing but that he said that when cats suffer a trauma and start to get better, they continue to get better, they don't regress. So I don't know if this is related to the accident or if it's a separate issue altogether since she is an older cat, about 13.

(I wrote the above Saturday afternoon) Later Saturday...did I say I don't know what's going on with this cat? I don't know what's going on with this cat. Tonight, she appeared in the kitchen so I offered her some food, the other flavor in the house, the one she had quit eating and she ate about as much as I had made her eat already today. So she's eaten almost as much today as the whole last 5 days combined. And I saw her drinking out of one of the water bowls a little while ago. So go figure. Now, Sunday she ate more this morning and is currently laying in her favorite spot under the yellow ginger in the little backyard.

Other than that, I haven't done a whole lot. Abby asked me to lead the yoga class Wednesday so she and her husband could celebrate their anniversary so I did. Did my volunteer work at SHARE on Thursday. It was a food truck delivery day so no clients but unloading the truck and storing it all away. I spent the morning filling a freezer with loaves of bread. I've spent 4 or 5 hours working in the new studio room over at the shop, trying to arrange the shelving units, moving all the frit in from the big bay and cleaning those shelving units. I still need to get the sink hooked up. Right now all the jars of frit and powder are either in boxes or on a cart or the table. I don't want to put it all back on the shelves until I'm satisfied with the arrangement of all the shelving and I'm not quite there yet.

And I made a strawberry crostata last night, easily the best one I think so far.

And since it's fall, even though you can't tell by the temperature since we're back in the low 90s and humid, fall things are blooming like the purple phillipine lily and it's white version,

the tall orange cosmos,

the heritage rose putting on a new flush,

the yellow angel trumpet,

another banana tree sent out a bloom,

the mist flower,

the rain tree.

  1. Poor kitty! But it does sound like she's on the mend now. I hope so.
You've been getting a lot done, actually. That shelving project alone is a big step in the direction you want to go.
Love your flowers! We have some of them, not all. Sure wish another of my bananas would put out a bloom. I love the one I have but I would gladly take another!

  2. That poor baby girl. I remember when my cat, Mittens was sick from urinary crystals. She wouldn't come out of my closet for days and would cry so loud every time she tried to go to the bathroom. Why is it that all the cute doctors are so freakin young and we're so freakin old. It's just not fair.

  3. I'm glad the kitty seems to be doing better. I guess she applied for, and got, her next life.

Your studio is impressive. Do you use a kiln?

    1. It's still in disarray right now so I'm not getting any work done yet. it's a long story. we worked out of a two car garage in the city for 40 years. bought a house outside a small town about 13 years ago and the auto body shop across the street 6 years ago. I worked out of the big room in the house until this year when it's been one building project after another (3 really) one of which was finally rebuilding 2 (into 1) of the 3 the interior rooms in the shop that got torn out after Harvey and that's the room I'm currently setting up, moving all the work stuff out of the house. but to answer your question, yes, we have two glass kilns though one of them needs to be repaired.

  4. I hate to see pets suffer. The neighbor's cat, Ruby, is visiting right now -- laid out on one of my office chairs, she's totally gone; sound asleep. She'll be up before long, looking to eat drink and watch out the window for birds or ??. She's such a dear... blessings to all.

  5. It sounds like Emma is on the mend, I certainly hope so. The yard is looking good. It still astound me that you can grow bananas.

    1. well, they aren't the kind you can just peel and eat like from the grocery store. they need to be peeled, sliced in half lengthwise, and sauteed in butter to bring out their sweetness.

  6. Our cosmos were still blooming until a hard rain last week.

Maybe that appetite stimulant worked for Emma. They gave Mike’s dad one last year, but he only needed it for a few months.

  7. A strawberry crostata is the one I've not made. I'm not fond of strawberries. I almost opened a can of peaches this weekend, to make a peach crostata, then I made a pan of cornbread instead.

  8. I am so sorry that your cat was in the wrong place at the wrong time, trauma. Going to the cute Vet was encouraging though! - Your flowers are so pretty, inspiring! AND there's YOU teaching Yoga!! You are a marvel, Ms. Ellen!

  9. Recovery's always an up and down proposition. They say that the third day or so after surgery usually is the worst for people -- maybe the same was true with Emma after the accident. In any case, I'm so glad to hear that she seems to have a bit of appetite back, and especially that she's drinking water. That's interesting about your bananas. I tried some off the trees here a couple of years ago, and they clearly couldn't be eaten raw -- or, they could, but they weren't very good. I'll remember about cooking them next year, if we get some more.

    1. someone gave my mother this luncheon tea set for four...small platter, 4 lunch plates, tea cups, saucers, and a cream and sugar but no teapot. she hated it, thought it was ugly but I love it. I saw the matching teapot in an antique in Oregon about 6 or 7 years ago but didn't buy it as I'm not really a tea drinker and it was big.

  11. I hope Emma continues to improve, so worrying. But whatever the swoony vet did seems to be doing the trick, so maybe he should become your new vet?

  12. I am, of course, as mystified as you about the cat. It's so hard to tell with animals. It sounds like a GREAT sign that she seems to be eating better and going back to her regular resting place under the bush. I wonder if she's just achey or sore from the accident. Pain will make an animal temporarily stop eating.

  13. So glad she is doing better. Nice studio space too. All I have right now is a tiny corner of the bedroom.

  14. I hope your kitty cat continues to eat and drink plenty of fluids. Not sure she'd be interested, but let her know she has a fan club rooting for her. Take care there.
