a political PS and a progress report

I haven't been writing or reading other blogs for the past week prior to my last post. I, once again, allowed myself to get sucked into the political morass. It's like a train wreck, a horror that you can't help but watch and you keep expecting it to end but car after car just keeps on crashing. I had intended the first paragraph of my last post to be a lead-in on a piece about Hillary but it carried on with a life of it's own. I've noticed in the last several weeks that many people are coming out now to defend her, rejecting the 25 year old dialog from the Republicans about how corrupt and untrustworthy she is when what they really meant was here's a powerful woman that scares the shit out of us. I think people are becoming weary of this presidential campaign, weary of Trump's bluster, of his tendency to keep the campaign in the gutter. Early voting has started in some states and people are lining up.

One more comment about the campaign and I'll move on...a block or so from my sister's house is a family that supports Trump and they have had yard signs out. I drove by there yesterday on my way to pick her up for yoga and they are sporting two new Trump signs that appeared after his remarks bragging about engaging in the sexual assault of women...Women for Trump. I can't even imagine the mindset of the woman that lives in that house. Well, maybe two more comments. I have noticed that while signs in support of all kinds of republican candidates are sprouting around this bastion of tea party republicans, the ones in support of Trump seem to be few and far between. I even saw a Clinton/Kaine yard sign!

So, I finished my work on the job last week and the last panel is in the booth and being worked on. The installation is scheduled for the 28th, a week after we expect to be finished, so that the owner of the company that does my installations can be on site to supervise and aid in the installation. This fact fills me with relief. It's going to be a very difficult install for several reasons...the marble clad openings that have a slot in the top and one in the bottom so that the glass has to be lifted into the top slot and set in the bottom slot, the only 3” of clearance between the sides of the panels and the marble clad columns between each panel, the 3' or more height of the wall that they are being set into, and the approximate 200 pound weight of the panels. I'm not able to take the usual shop pictures of the finished cleaned off panels because we can't move them so these pics aren't the greatest but here's where we are so far.

middle panel finished

right panel finished but not cleaned or sealed

  1. Incredible work. Wish I could watch a video of it in progress. I have a Hillary bumper sticker, but am afraid to put it on my truck, because I don't want Trump supporters to damage my vehicle. His scorched earth policy is frightening. He isn't going away without bringing it all crashing down.

  2. That's beautiful work and I know it's been a huge pain for you for a long time but in the long run, I hope you feel as if it will have been worth it. I know that when people see them they are going to be blown away. And I'm pretty impressed that a vet's office would actually invest in original art. I'd take my cats to them!
As to Trump- dear god, may his be over soon and may we never hear from him again.
That would be my prayer, were I to pray.

    1. Thanks Mary. I hope so too. Mostly I'm just going to be relieved it's over. and it's not just a vet' office, it's the teaching veterinarian hospital at Texas A&M University. They remodeled and added art to four different buildings total in this project.

  3. I posted a political rant on my blog last because I just had to. If we remain quiet and try to keep from rocking the boat we are no better than those who fell in line when every dangerous dictator takes his ugly position. As women and those men who respect women we must speak out. Having said that I am done with politics on my blog and will go back to other stuff, like the recent trip to the farm.

  4. Have you seen the great new ad, "You're so vain." Bless Carly Simon and her little tweak.

  5. We voted yesterday - I was pretty excited to vote for President Obama, but I think that yesterday beat even that excitement. It really felt like a vote against evil (or at best, a vote against incompetent, tone-deaf, buffoonery).

    Love the panels!

  6. Spectacular Ellen, what talent and perseverance it took and it's paid off. I'm sure they will be so very proud to have work of that caliber in their offices. The whole thing is getting pretty exhausting, I too wish it could just be over and he could go back to just being the ordinary, worst person on earth that he's always been.

  8. When I was in Florida in July and August, I saw surprisingly few Trump signs -- for a place that's usually awash in campaign signs for Republican candidates.

  9. The panels really look splendid. I knew they'd be heavy, but I didn't realize they would be SO heavy, and that business of having to insert them with so little clearance will be tricky. The thought of actually installing them makes me nervous. I'm glad you'll have plenty of assistance. Does anyone -- you, the installer, etc. -- carry insurance that would cover an unfortunate incident? (Of course, that hardly would help in terms of the artistic work, but still...)

    1. yes, the installer does have insurance. but generally I don't make them pay for the panel if it gets broken during installation, just replace the glass. things have gotten broken during installations but so far, not any piece as big as these. usually when it happens it's a suction cup failure.

  10. I would have preferred Bernie Sanders. But I'm not American, so it's not my problem. I live in Northern Europe, in a country that has been social-democratic Sanders-style for all of my life. I was fortunate to get free education, from elementary school to PhD, so I don't complain >:)

    1. I don't think Bernie Sanders was electable though I would have voted for him. Too extreme for too many.
