Tuesday’s sky.

We did finally get some rain Tuesday, about an inch and a half, but need more. And speaking of rain, my pecan crop is going to be a disaster this year. All that rain we had earlier in the summer caused the developing pecans, of which there were many, to get some kind of mildew or fungal disease because they never got a chance to dry out. Some are worse than others like these. I asked my retired farmer friend what that meant for the pecans. He said it meant they were rotten inside. Sigh.
As mentioned the blank watercolor note cards came and I’ve been having fun using the watercolor pencils and crayons. I have a vast trove of drawings of flowers, plants, birds and other critters from my decades of etched glass and pate de verre. I’m wanting to limit my time investment in these little paintings so I’m using things I’ve already drawn. Just have to transfer the drawing to the card, color them in and add a little water. I did two more Wednesday and another on Thursday after I got home from SHARE.
We got our second shingles shot today. My PCP explained why the first shot is a breeze and the second shot knocks you on your butt for a day. The first shot you have no antibodies and it creates about 75% protection. The second shot, now you have antibodies and they are doing their job which is why people get side effects. After the second shot we get about 95% protection from shingles so be prepared to feel bad for a day.
So that was on the agenda for today but yesterday, when I went over to feed the cats I got the long handled nippers out and did some pruning on the trees and grape vines in the back because Joe was coming Monday to mow over there and that shit was hanging down almost to the ground. And while I was at it I cut some of the low branches off one of the catalpa trees that were hanging on the little front porch of the house and then some of the long rose canes from the arbor and left all that on the ground to deal with later. Paisleigh and her dad were over at the shop and so she trailed around behind me to help telling me many times “because I’m good at that”. Yes you are, I told her, you’re good at many things. And then I discovered that my readers had fallen out of my pocket at some point and although I searched around every area I worked I did not find them. Poot.
This morning Joe called me at 8 AM to say he could come on Sunday as he was going to be out of town on Monday (oh, yeah, holiday). I told him just anytime today or tomorrow at his convenience so he’s coming today because, he reminded me, it’s supposed to rain this afternoon and maybe even the next two or three days. Perhaps this morning so after I fed the cat, fed the dog, fed the birds, took my pills I had to get over there and pick up all the stuff from yesterday and lug it to the burn pile and wind up the hose so he could mow. Getting hot and sweaty first thing is not how I like to start my day.

And because Trump is a resentful needy little grievance baby, he has revoked Kamala Harris’ continued Secret Service protection today, the day before her (best selling) book tour starts, protection afforded to all past Vice Presidents. I have nothing to say about the shooting in Minnesota. Once again nothing but thoughts and prayers from republicans even though those kids were praying when they got shot and their god did nothing. But you know, for republicans it’s never the guns but mental health while they cut funding for mental health and continue to let disturbed individuals buy all the fucking guns they want. This is a sick country led by the sickest of individuals. No citizen needs an AR-15 for protection. They aren’t good for that. Their only purpose is to kill as many people as possible as fast as possible.

I hate to end on this so here’s a picture of flowers on the white orchid tree/shrub in front of Pam’s house.
Your little paintings are gorgeous. Clean and simple and delightful crowd pleasers to be sure.
ReplyDeleteThe flowers at the bottom are amazing! I want to be that flower when I come back reincarnated. If I did, I would not have to think about the orange thug baby and his ilk.
Thanks. That's what I'm going for.
DeleteThanks for ending on pictures of flowers. I’ll take that image to bed with me. (Oh, your art is wonderful.)
ReplyDeleteYes, it seemed a sour note to end on. (Thanks)
DeleteCodex: Like the Robin. Are you done with them
ReplyDeleteYes. I do critique them but I'm letting them be. The point is to minimize my time and be good enough for what they are.
DeleteThat white orchid is a soul-cleanser after thinking about the world-champeen ugliness of Trump.
ReplyDeleteSeemed appropriate to end with it.
DeleteToo bad that your pecan crop is totally ruined this year. Maybe if Paisleigh can direct her “I’m good at” skills to sleuthing she can find your reading glasses. As for Trump, there is no bottom of the barrel for him. He is truly depraved.
ReplyDeleteYeah, some years are good, some not so good. I'm hoping the ones at the top of the trees will be good.
DeleteGlad you got your Shingles shots done. I never had bad side effects from the shots I have gotten - maybe a bit of a sore arm - but it's sure worth it.
ReplyDeleteYour cards are lovely and will be good sellers for sure!
I put it off for years hearing people say how bad a reaction they had. I'm glad I finally did it and was surprised at how little they affected me. If the cards don't sell I have ready made gifts.
DeleteI love the notecards! We got our shingles series last year (I think? Time blurs.) Sorry about the pecans! And hopefully you can find your readers (& that they're not broken).
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteEven after Joe mowed I went back and looked. Nothing, not even broken bits of plastic. the just simply vanished.
That little robin is a heart-stealer.
ReplyDeleteGlen finally gave up on the freaking grape vines that killed and brought down the tree between our house and the church next door. He got the tree out quickly but he cut on those vines and hauled them for three days in the horrible heat and said, "That's enough of that." I think he's going to hire someone. The entire row of trees there have been killed by the vines and it all needs to come out.
Not a good year for pecans here either. Sure looked like it was going to be.
Trump is the cruelest bully on the world playground. I did not realize that former vice-presidents only received six months of protection after leaving office and that Biden had extended hers for another year. So I guess the ratbastard was within his rights to cancel that but again- deliberate cruelty.
I did that robin in glass and it came out really well. Happy the card did too.
DeleteI hate those wild grape vines.
Neither did I until after I made this post. So yeah, without Biden it would have ended anyway but that Trump canceled it is true to form.
Wonderful notecards, the paper surface looks also very nice. Ilove that kind of thick paper, feels nice to the touch.
ReplyDeleteThe second shingles shot knocked me out for a day. But what's a day in the big chaos of life. The man here has had shingles twice in one year and only noticed it because of the weird rash on his ribcage.
One of the news items on this morning's breakfast radio was the drop of numbers in students wanting to spend a high school year in the US. One staff member of the agencies that sell these exchange years here said in an interview that they no longer recommend participants travel with a burner phone "because then the border controls will definitely get suspicious and anyway, they probably have access to anybody's social media". Basically, they recommend to opt for Canada or Australia/NZ instead.
The card stock has a lot of body so yeah, that's a plus.
DeleteI'm not surprised no one wants to come here. I wouldn't either in their place. Too much random unnecessary cruelty. And no guarantees they would be allowed admittance anyway.
Word is the Pentagon pizza orders are off the charts. Expect a wag the dog war or the takeover. People in the Trump regime are actually astonished at the gains they've made, way more than they thought. It's easy to topple things. Harder to build.
ReplyDeletethen again this could just be the latest discharge of trolling from the reservoir of MAGA bullshit
DeleteWe should be in the streets daily and pissed but Americans are too soft, had it too good for too long. The American empire is crumbling right on schedule.
DeleteThat's too bad about the pecans. My grandmother used to send me a couple of pounds (shelled!) from her tree. So much better than the little bags from the store. You do have the prettiest flowers there.
ReplyDeleteYeah, some years are good, some not so good, and some none at all. I still have a couple of pounds from last year.
