bold squirrel, flowers, healing

Zinnias!

I wrote my last post mostly in the morning the day after my surgery and didn’t really get around to proofreading it until the afternoon when it was already published. OMG! So many typos. Now three days after my surgery and I’m ready for it to be healed! I know, I know, patience. It will take weeks to be fully healed and my vision settled. It’s a little better every day, colors are saturated again but I get a grainy feeling off and on and I’m ready for that to stop. I have to wear sunglasses outside even when it’s overcast. In fact I’m wearing them now in the house because it’s a clear blue sky day and the sun is coming in the windows I face and reflecting off the laminate on my desk into my face. I slept off and on most of the day Wednesday after my surgery. Slept a lot Thursday but not as much and even took a couple of brief naps on Friday.

We’re having cool mornings and low humidity days so the back door is open. First thing I do every morning is fill Cat’s bowl, fill the bird feeder (though I’m out of seed right now), put a couple of handfuls of cracked corn on a paving stone (also out of that right now), and put a handful of peanuts on the ceramic elephant for the squirrels. I missed putting out the peanuts on Wednesday and Thursday though I did on Friday. I keep the bag of peanuts on the shelf under my big work table easily visible from the outside when the door is open and I don’t close it until dusk when the weather is nice. Apparently I’ve been being watched. I was in the next room yesterday early afternoon when I heard a quiet rustling. When I looked through the door into my studio room I caught a flash of a squirrel dashing out the door. This morning the open bag of peanuts was empty except for one nut, the bag had been moved further back on the shelf and there were a few peanut shells laying about. There was only about a handful left in that bag but now I suppose I’ll have to use a clothes pin to close the new bag. We’ll see how clever the little devil is.

I looked out the back door on Thursday to see this.

This is not from lack of water. I’d already cut off two wilted long branches but there was new growth at the top so I figured these older stems were dying back. I have no idea why this Brazilian button is dying and I’m not happy about it. There is one new little plant coming up from seed in the pot so hopefully it will grow and thrive.

Not everything in the yard is pink or purple: developing tomatoes, clasping leaved coneflowers, various daylilies, easter lilies, althea (rose of sharon).

But a lot is: althea (rose of sharon). (I do not know why blogger insists on this type face for these sentences but it will not change.)

And the ginger root from the grocery store finally sprouted!

While I was fixing breakfast and eating the little devil made about 5 attempts. I saw him/her (?) on the shelf under the table and when it saw me watching it scampered out. We could hear the rustling of the cellophane bag while we were eating. A couple of times Minnie chased it out. It managed to get the clothespin off three times, the last time the little bastard tore the cellophane bag (which of course I knew would happen).

Ok, it’s been fun and games little squirrel but that’s all over now. I emptied the peanuts into a ziplock bag and put it on top of a shelving unit further back in the room.

  1. I think the squirrel will tear into any plastic bag you try - maybe a jar or metal tin will keep it away from the peanuts?! Hope your eye feels better soon.

    1. I'm sure it will but it has to find it first. A week later and my eye feels just about normal.

  2. Codex: Young lady! You need to take it easy. No bending for at least a week.

Squirrels and raccoons crafty little bas...ds. Especially when they pull the whole dainty 6 kids at home, could you pass me a walnut. I usually do.

    1. Not bending! Squatting. And I spend most my time sitting at my desk or on the couch.

    2. Codex: You didn't ask but depending on what procedure you received (with/without sutures) that lens needs to settle in and stay were it's supposed to. Anything that raises intraocular pressure doesn't let it drain. Even squatting. Even if your bored for a week sit or gently lie down.

  4. Oh how sad to have a plant that is dying back...I do hope it replenishes itself. I need to check on mine that didn't catch the rain the other day! Good to be reminded. Squirrel is definitely resourceful!

    1. I need to remove that little sprout and put it in a smaller pot with better soil but can't do anything like that yet. Actually, I hope more new ones sprout.

  5. Squirrels are vastly entertaining. And annoying. Sort of like toddlers (to me anyway). Hope your eye gets its act together!

    1. The eye is better and better, almost normal today. The weird thing is my eye color seems to have changed.

  6. Squirrels do watch, and learn. I finally went to the feed store and got a big, heavy duty plastic bin with snap handles for seed, but now I have it sitting in the house, just inside the door. I caught the squirrels happily attempting to chew into it, and said, "Nope. Not going to happen." I can't remember -- did you have laser surgery on your eye, or scalpel? Your post-surgery routine's rather different than what I went through -- I just was curious.

    1. I don't know. Probably scalpel. Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery had to do the drops four times a day. It's nice having someone to do it for me. It's be a bigger pain in the butt if I had to administer them myself.

  7. I am so jealous of your flowers! You have so many more than I do. And my zinnias are still babies. Oh well. At least I'm picking green beans.
Your Rose of Sharon is so lovely. I need to plant some of those.
Take care of that eye, Ellen! I know you are but be extra specially careful of it. We depend on what you see out of it to cheer our days.

    1. I depend on it! So yeah, being a good girl. If I ever get around to sending you the turk's cap which is growing a lot I'll send some rose of sharon seeds. Or maybe later when they form. Or maybe I'll dig up one of the many volunteers I pull up frequently. But all that has to wait until I get the all clear from the eye doctor.

  8. I'd suggest a binder clip, but now that the squirrel knows where the good stuff is, it will rip any bag apart. And it will check all the shelves until it finds the bag, or is convinced there's no more (and that can take weeks). I'd hesitate to use a glass jar, the crafty jerks will see the peanuts and shove it off the shelf. It may be an accident, or it may be on purpose, in either case, a mess to clean up. Do you have an unused tin? While a raccoon would have no problem getting the lid off, squirrels aren't quite so talented.

    1. Haven't seen it in the house since I moved the peanuts. It's starting to get hot so the door won't be open much longer in any case.

    1. Spring comes early here and summer is hot on it's heels. We have to plant early if we want any tomatoes at all.

  11. Wow those tomatoes look amazing. Do you make salsa with them? I started a salsa garden this year and I'm so excited!

    1. No, I don't make salsa with them but I do make my own tomato sauce. And the only time we eat tomatoes is when we grow them. Hot house tomatoes from the grocery store are flavorless.

  12. That squirrel is going to keep at it. Pretty soon it will be opening your refrigerator! LOL

Your ginger looks much better than mine, which is once again growing with twisted leaves. I don't know why this happens to me every time I try growing ginger.

    1. Haven't seen it since I moved the peanuts. And it will soon be too hot to keep the door open anyway. This is my first success with growing ginger from a grocery store root. Yet to be seen if it survives.
