It’s dark this morning with lightning flashes in the distance and thunder rumbling. The leopard frogs are barking but no rain so far. The dog is her usual mess but at least I’m not trying to sleep. I actually got a good night’s sleep last night. Only woke up once, maybe twice, and went right back to sleep.
Wednesday night my night blooming cereus, aka queen of the night, bloomed. I never get tired of photographing these.
I finally got out my watercolors again determined to paint the zucchini or move on after ignoring them for months and then put them away before the big yard and house clean up for the party. I did not think I would be able to satisfactorily render the zucchini but I’ve been working on it and it’s not so bad. I’ve been using my colored pencil drawing for a model rather than an actual zucchini of which I have two in the refrigerator because I really like the way the drawing came out and the ones in the fridge are just pretty much solid dark green. I can’t remember what I used as a model for the drawing, a picture or an actual zucchini. It’s not quite done, I’ll finish it today, so no picture yet.
Stephanie asked me at yoga last night how the note cards and prints were coming, that they have been getting a lot of people coming into the market asking if they had notecards or art. They did the final color corrections at the print shop and made up a proof set of the notecards for my approval but I haven’t seen them yet. Sarah has them and I’ll get them this weekend so we’re very close to having an actual product. I think I’ll frame the squash flower/zucchini painting and put it in the market and see if it sells.
Well, the storm has moved directly over us now with the rain. It got darker and darker and now the lightning and thunder is just about constant.
Wednesday I made the tomato sauce. It’s pretty much a day long process. I started about 11 AM and prepared the tomatoes cutting out the stem part, peeled the garlic, coated it all with olive oil, picked the basil leaves, salt and pepper. Then they roast slowly for about 4 hours. Once the roasted tomatoes are cool enough to handle it all gets pureed/liquified and then put in small jars and vacuumed sealed bags for the freezer. I got 6 cups from about 6 pounds of tomatoes. This time I used half romas and half small regular tomatoes.
Jade was here yesterday. She had just returned from 10 days in California nannying one of our nephew's kids. They live in Austin but have a summer house in California. They’re taking her with them on a cruise out of Greece this summer. Nice gig. She’s their part time nanny in Austin and the rest of the week she works at the animal shelter for the city. Anyway, she was here to pick up her car and spend the day yesterday. She went with me to SHARE for which I was glad as we were pretty busy and most all big orders. But her main reason for spending the day was to get my help dyeing a dress. She had a bridesmaid dress that was a dusky blue, a color I liked but she didn’t, and wanted to dye it either a dusky pink or brown. We tried the pink first with just really hot water out of the tap but it didn’t take on the synthetic fabric. So then we tried the brown on the stove using the candy thermometer to get the right temperature. The brown dye was specifically for polyester/nylon type fabric which the pink was not and it came out really nice, a sort of not quite mauve, not quite brown color. She wants to wear it to a wedding tonight so now it just needs to be ironed.
The rain is mostly stopped now though thunder is still rumbling in the distance.
I love how that color turned out!!!!!
ReplyDeleteSee - I just dont have the time to prep such things - give me jars off the shelf LOL - or let me BUY handmade sauce from someone LOL
I didn't either until I retired.
DeleteThe storm hit us around 3am. Not a fan of loud wakeup calls at 3 in the morning. Scared the puppies and the cat. It went on until 8am and finally moved on. It was a big storm.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it was very flashy and noisy but only gave us about an in and a half of rain but that was on top of the 3" we had already gotten.
DeleteIt's a hazy day here today as smoke from Canadian forest fires has blown down here to Illinois. Weird!
ReplyDeleteI love your lovely photo of the lovely flower!
We'll be getting hazy skies from the Saharan dust blowing across the Atlantic now.
DeleteThe picture of the night blooming cereus is spectacular. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou stopped me short with leopard frogs. I am now looking online for them.
Leopard frogs are really cool. I usually just se them out of the corner of my eye as they leap away but now and then I get a good look.
DeleteI really admire your kitchen efforts. One thing that holds me back now is a reluctance to turn on the oven. It's been hot enough to feel like full summer, and adding any more heat to the house just doesn't appeal. Of course I could turn down the AC, but I'm all too aware of what that can do to the electric bill. I will say that tomatoes in salads can be darned good. HEB has a new variety of Roma tomatoes in stock now, from down in the valley. They're a touch pricey, but they taste like home grown.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised by how much I like the color of that dress. It's very attractive.
Oh, we just sweat. Our thermometer stays at 78 no matter what. I just picked two black krim tomatoes off my plants. They are just about my favorite currently.
DeleteGranny Ellen can fix anything i reckon! You make things better! You should go with on the trip to Greece- you would be welcomed I am sure.
ReplyDeleteIf they were footing the bill for me too I'd go in heartbeat. Alas...
DeleteCodex: Beautiful photograph. Like the black white balance.
ReplyDeleteHow long does the sauce keep in the freezer?
My Preserving The Fruits Of The Earth book says stewed tomatoes and tomato juice is good for up to 10 - 12 months so I figure tomato sauce is the same. The All Knowing Oracle says for best taste 6 months, after that taste starts to diminish but is good for 12 months. We use it up long before that.
DeleteI am sure we will all look forward to seeing your rendition of zucchini. We used to do a great deal of canning, but other than for batches of pasta sauce don’t do much of it any more. Most of all, I miss our pickled beets. They were soooo delicious!
ReplyDeleteNever been a big fan of pickled anything. Wasn't something that was served in my house growing up. I don't can, just freeze. It seems to be that the long water bath would destroy some of the nutrients. Of course I've lost plenty of stuff I put up in the freezer when hurricanes cause the power to go out and they wouldn't happen if I canned.
Delete"Queen of the night." Absolutely perfect name.
ReplyDeleteI used to dye things frequently. Haven't done that in quite awhile.
It's so cool about the notecards. Can't wait to see the zucchini .
I usually miss the bloom. Either I miscalculate when it's going to open or by 10 PM I've forgotten all about it.
DeleteThat flower is spectacular!
ReplyDeleteAnd they're big. and so fragrant. My big plant later in the summer will put on up to 24 blooms at a time.
DeleteThat cereus is amazing. And what a perfect photo of it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, high praise coming from a photographer.
DeleteI'm excited to see the finished painting. I had a synthetic shirt that I wanted to dye & THOUGHT I had bought the kind of dye for synthetics, but no. So I sent the dye back & ended up just throwing the shirt away (it had a stain on it). What a waste!
ReplyDeleteShould have used it for a work shirt, you know for all the times you are out laboring in the yard. hahahahaha
Delete😂😂😂😂😂
DeleteGreat picture! I never seem to be able to stay awake long enough to see mine.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
Thanks. I usually forget to go look or miscalculate when it's going to open.
