it's like the Wild Kingdom out here y'all

Our resident praying mantis, which I have posted pictures of previously, attracted herself a mate.

She apparently got tired of his 'mansplaining' everything to her and took matters into her own hands. Or head into mouth as the case may be.

Later, she had herself a fine meal.

I'm expecting some egg laying before long. Her abdomen is getting quite large.

I couldn't get the third picture of her as she is no longer on the shrub where she has resided all summer so either I finally annoyed her enough or she has gone to lay her eggs. In any case, she is gone.

  1. Just like we learned in school! I wonder if all those preying mantis teachers brought to school on a stick in a mayo jar ever complete their life's cycle.

  9. The selfie is perfect, and your mantis momma is probably securing the future for her offspring. What do you suppose the function is of eating your mate after coitus?
