frozen

Last night was supposed to be our coldest night so far. They were predicting 25˚ but that's what it was when I got up this morning so I'm thinking it got even colder. Went out this morning to replenish the bird feeders and to see if there were any good pictures.

Polypro long johns, fleece pants, fleece socks, leather moccasins, camisole, flannel shirt, sweatshirt, fleece pullover, fleece fingerless gloves (fingers, just no tips), and new crochet hat from Ms Dana Bug.

OK. Fingerless gloves are a bad idea in 25˚ weather. By the time I came in, the exposed ends of my fingers were red as a holly berry and hurt like hell. Had to run the hot water to warm them up.

We got the garden covered Sunday.

Nothing to photograph but a carpet of leaves and frozen stuff.

the natural water filter for the water lily pond which had a crust of ice on it – frozen

parrot feather on the left, swordleaf on the right – frozen

elephant ear (oops, should have covered that) – frozen

birdbath – frozen solid

night blooming jasmine – frozen

I know, what a whiner, right? Not even any snow, just a little frozen water. Many of you are having to endure days of -25˚ and worse.

It's actually not so bad out there now. This morning was the end of it for us and it will begin to warm up quickly. The sun is shining and already all the ice has melted.

  1. I've cried when I've lost plants to a frost, so I won't complain about your complaining. How you thaw out soon.

  4. Ah, I wanted to see a photo of you all dressed up with the new cap. Maybe next time.

Portland has been beautiful with lots of sunshiny days but today the clouds are back but with only a little drizzle. Last time I lived here, back in 2002, it poured rain all January and February.

  5. Hey if you lived in Michigan and were whining I might say...you shoulda known betta. But you live in a part of the country where 25 degrees in not an expected event. So you whine is justified. I whined when I saw you photos.....so sorry. Oma Linda

  7. Well when you are not used to it 25 is pretty shocking I'm sure! It will be 1 here tonight… but we that's not unusual here in NH. Stay cozy.

  8. I would be upset. Up here, everything is all ready dead or dormant. Today would have been a great selfie day...

My car thermometer said -17 as I took children to the dentist this morning.

  10. Your poor little garden...I do hope they snap back. I hope your lady turtle is OK.

  11. Wow -- that looks seriously cold. Where is Big Mama these days? I hope she is in a protected place, though I guess turtles have figured out how to manage cold weather.

  12. You're colder than we are here in western OR, so I guess you can complain in this direction. I'll listen!
Heck though. I remember "polar vortexes" every winter of my childhood in Wisconsin. I was glad to hear that our heated-up planet still had it in her to produce such a blast.

Also, when I first saw your covered garden I thought it was a big grave.:-)

  14. I'm glad you had a hat to wear :)

Today I went out at lunch to check out our new building (where my office is moving next week) & after running around the building I had to actually turn down the heat in my car to drive back to the old office. I was hot! It was quite an unfamiliar sensation!

  15. Go ahead and whine. Most of us who endured the recent .. ahem. -36C (-33F) are more used to it. But so sick of it. Today is a balmy -10C (14F). Sad to see the plants succumb though. Ours are long buried under a couple of feet of the white stuff. :)

  16. Errr.. when I said that we're used to it.. I meant the cold.. not the whining. Just in case that sounded wrong. :)
